These proceedings will be of interest to High Energy Physicists, Faculty and post doctoral researchers working in the area of neutrino physics, muon physics, and Accelerator Engineers involved in the design and construction of muon colliders, and neutrino factories. Recently, the neutrino physics has undergone many important developments having far reaching consequences in our understanding of standard model of particle physics. New next generation experiments involving neutrinos are being planned, wherein decisive and precision measurements are required to explore the physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Neutrino beams of high intensity as well as quality and purity are required for these. The present workshop is a part of the series of annual meetings, the international workshop on Neutrino Factories, Super-beams, beta-beams (NUFACT) devoted to discuss the physics, accelerator and detector technologies of novel and conventional neutrino beams. In addition, the physics of neutrino scattering and experiments involving intense muon beams were also discussed in this meeting.

The physics of neutrinos--uncharged elementary particles that are key to helping us better understand the nature of our universe--is one of the most exciting frontiers of modern science. This book provides a comprehensive overview of neutrino physics today and explores promising new avenues of inquiry that could lead to future breakthroughs. The Physics of Neutrinos begins with a concise history of the field and a tutorial on the fundamental properties of neutrinos, and goes on to discuss how the three neutrino types interchange identities as they propagate from their sources to detectors. The book shows how studies of neutrinos produced by such phenomena as cosmic rays in the atmosphere and nuclear reactions in the solar interior provide striking evidence that neutrinos have mass, and it traces our astounding progress in deciphering the baffling experimental findings involving neutrinos. The discovery of neutrino mass offers the first indication of a new kind of physics that goes beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles, and this book considers the unanticipated patterns in the masses and mixings of neutrinos in the framework of proposed new theoretical models. The Physics of Neutrinos maps out the ambitious future facilities and experiments that will advance our knowledge of neutrinos, and explains why the way forward in solving the outstanding questions in neutrino science will require the collective efforts of particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.

The LAGUNA/LBNO consortium proposes a next generation neutrino observatory to address fundamental questions in particle and astroparticle physics [89]. The first option of the Design Study consists of a far detector, in its first stage a 20 kt LAr double phase TPC and a magnetised iron calorimeter, situated at 2300 km from CERN inside the Pyhasalmi mine and a near detector based on a high-pressure argon gas TPC. The very long baseline allows a precise neutrino spectrum shape determination over the lst and 2nd oscillation maxima and will therefore allow the exploration of the L/E behavior, distinguishing the e-ects arising from !cP and the neutrino propagation in matter clarifying the ordering of the masses of neutrinos and measuring the CP phase. In parallel, it will allow to investigate a broad astrophysics program including Supernovae neutrino detection and proton decay. The second option of the LAGUNA/LBNO Design Study is a Megaton scale Water Cherenkov detector (MEMPHYS) installed under the Frejus mountain (130 km from CERN) with the aim to determine the CP violation in the leptonic sector and to study astrophysical sources of neutrinos as well as atmospheric neutrinos and proton decay. In both cases a dedicated neutrino beam from CERN is assumed. This PhD work is a detailed study for the evaluation of the physics potential of both options putting in evidence the advantages and the differences of the two technologies. This thesis will detail the reasons of the choice of a Giant double phase Liquid Argon detector at a very long baseline taking into account also the latest improvements in the knowledge of the neutrino oscillation parameters from current experiments and considering future beam layouts and complementary baselines. It will be proven that LBNO can guarantee the Mass Hierarchy determination within the first years of run and a 5 sigma coverage of most of the phase space in about 10 years of run.

The centerpiece of the thesis is the search for muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillations which would indicate a non-zero mixing angle between the first and third neutrino generations (θ13), currently the “holy grail” of neutrino physics. The optimal extraction of the electron neutrino oscillation signal is based on the novel “library event matching” (LEM) method which Ochoa developed and implemented together with colleagues at Caltech and at Cambridge, which improves MINOS’ (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillator Search) reach for establishing an oscillation signal over any other method. LEM will now be the basis for MINOS’ final results, and will likely keep MINOS at the forefront of this field until it completes its data taking in 2011. Ochoa and his colleagues also developed the successful plan to run MINOS with a beam tuned for antineutrinos, to make a sensitive test of CPT symmetry by comparing the inter-generational mass splitting for neutrinos and antineutrinos. Ochoa’s in-depth, creative approach to the solution of a variety of complex experimental problems is an outstanding example for graduate students and longtime practitioners of experimental physics alike. Some of the most exciting results in this field to emerge in the near future may find their foundations in this thesis.

Astrophysical neutrinos allow us to access energies and baselines that cannot be reached by human-made accelerators, offering unique probes of new physics phenomena. This thesis aims to address the challenges currently facing searches for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics in the high-energy universe using astrophysical neutrinos, particularly in the contexts of flavor measurements and connections with dark matter. The search for new physics with astrophysical neutrinos requires as a prerequisite understanding standard neutrino sources, which remain ambiguous. We begin by performing a multi-wavelength search for astrophysical neutrino sources using nine years of IceCube data. We find hints of neutrino emission from radio-bright Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), further supporting recent claims that neutrino emission occurs near the core of AGNs. Next we turn our attention to BSM searches. Accurate flavor measurements of the astrophysical flux provide a smoking gun signature to BSM physics. This requires a precise measurement of the tau neutrino fraction. However, tau identification proved a major hurdle in the current generation of observatories. We confront the problem of astrophysical neutrino flavor measurements by first introducing taurunner, a simulation tool that accurately models the propagation of tau neutrinos including previously neglected effects such as tau lepton energy losses and depolarization in matter. We show that better modeling of tau neutrino propagation improves IceCube transient point-source sensitivities by more than an order of magnitude at EeV energies, and diffuse flux sensitivities by a factor of two. Second, we use this software to model IceCube counterparts to anomalous events reported by the ANITA experiment. After performing an analysis using IceCube data, we show that all Standard Model explanations are ruled out. Looking ahead to the future of flavor measurements, we also present a study that predicts the production of tau neutrinos via the propagation of electron and muon neutrinos in Earth, finding an irreducible but quantifiable background to next-generation tau neutrino observatories. Finally, we attempt to address the field's shared ignorance of the origin of neutrino and dark matter masses by exploring potential connections between the two. Specifically, we present an analysis of dark matter annihilation and decay to neutrinos. We obtain limits from MeV to ZeV masses using more than a dozen neutrino experiments. Notably, using recent data from the SuperKamiokande experiment, we place the first-ever limit on dark matter annihilation that reaches the thermal relic abundance in the neutrino sector, challenging notions that studies with neutrinos cannot be sensitive enough to make strong claims about the nature of dark matter.

Neutrinos play a key role in many areas of particle physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics. The recent discovery of neutrino oscillation has given the first hint of new physics beyond the standard model. Clearly, it is extremely important to study further the oscillation and other fundamental properties of neutrinos. It is also important to improve our knowledge of neutrino-nucleus reactions, which are crucial for understanding a large class of astrophysical phenomena. These and many other interesting questions can be investigated at stopped pion neutrino facilities like the one planned for the Spallation Neutron Source at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The purpose of the Carolina Symposium was twofold: (1) to explore and exchange ideas on the latest developments in general frontiers of neutrino physics and related fields; (2) to address specific issues pertaining to the above-mentioned stopped pion neutrino facility. Among the topics covered in the proceedings are: cosmology and neutrino; standard model tests with neutrinos; neutrino oscillation, experiments and theories; dark matter search; double beta-decay; rare events detection techniques; the solar neutrino problem; supernova explosion; nucleosynthesis; and the ORLaND project.
