In Johann Jakob Wettstein's Principles for New Testament Textual Criticism Silvia Castelli investigates the genesis, development, and legacy of Wettstein’s criteria for evaluating New Testament variant readings. Wettstein’s guidelines, the Animadversiones et cautiones, are the first well-organized essay on New Testament text-critical methodology, first published in the Prolegomena to his New Testament in 1730 and republished with some changes in 1752. In his essay, Wettstein presents a new text-critical method based on the manuscripts’ evidence and on the critic’s judgment. Moving away from the authority invested in established printed editions, Wettstein’s methodology thus effectively promotes and enhances intellectual freedom. The second part of this volume offers a critical text and an annotated English translation of Wettstein’s text-critical principles.

Before the 1960s, the goal of New Testament Textual Criticism was singular: to retrieve the "original text" of the New Testament. Since then, the goalpost has incrementally shifted away from the "original text" to retrieving "any text" or "many texts" of the NT. Some scholars have even concluded that the "original text" is hopelessly lost and cannot be retrieved with any confidence or accuracy. Other scholars have gone a step further to claim that the idea of an "original text" itself is a misconception that needs to be abandoned. If this new approach in NTTC is correct, then the authority of Scripture is weakened or no longer valid. It will be shown in this book that such is not the case. Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on the need to return to the traditional goalpost of NTTC, i.e., to retrieve the original text. Without a generally definitive text, the door will be left wide open to recreate any desired text of the NT. An unsettled original text will result in an unsettled biblical theology due to a lack of any authoritative and standard text. Consequently, it will lead to an unsettled Christian faith and practice.

A guide to New Testament textual criticism that introduces students to the methods currently used by the most respected specialists in the field. While there are many introductions to twentieth-century New Testament textual criticism, scholars and students need a twenty-first-century introduction to the praxis of New Testament textual criticism that refines and replaces some elements of the traditional approach in keeping with recent advancements in the discipline. Methodologies known to be deficient are still being taught, and even New Testament commentators apply outdated and problematic methods in their evaluation of textual variants. This new introduction guides readers in the practice of a more refined, reasoned eclecticism to identify the original reading of the New Testament text. Readers will learn to identify variant readings and the witnesses in support of them from the apparatuses in the major editions of the Greek New Testament. New Testament Textual Criticism for the 21st Century includes several examples and exercises that guide students in applying critical-thinking skills to specific variant units. The goal throughout is to move from abstract discussion to concrete examples to offer students the "picture worth a thousand words." Most importantly, the book demonstrates how new tools and findings generally discussed only in scholarly literature are changing the text of the most respected editions of the Greek New Testament and can aid researchers in their study of manuscripts.

In Textual Criticism and Sacred Texts, Signe Cohen looks at the text-critical scholarship on sacred texts across disciplines. She traces the development of the genealogical method and discusses its role in textual criticism today. The book examines the applicability of traditional text-critical methods to oral texts as well as the roles of translations and commentaries in textual criticism. Cohen then turns to the under-theorized question of the relationship between religion and text-critical scholarship and outlines ethics of textual criticism applied to religious texts. She then discusses how new digital technologies will change the textual scholarship of the future and proposes new ways that scholars can collaborate across sub-disciplines.
