Dylan Thomas’s reputation precedes him. In keeping with his claim that he held ‘a beast, an angel, and a madman in him’, interpretations of his work have ranged from solemn adoration to exaggerated mythologising. His many voices continue to reverberate across culture and the arts: from poetry and letters, to popular music and Hollywood film. Between May 1930 and August 1935, Dylan Thomas kept numerous notebooks of poems. They contain the drafts of almost all of the work that would form his first two reputation-making collections, 18 Poems (1934) and Twenty-five Poems (1936), and many of those in his third collection, The Map of Love (1939). Thomas sold four of the notebooks, spanning May 1930 to May 1934, to the University of Buffalo in 1941. However, the existence of a fifth notebook, covering the period June 1934 to August 1935, was unknown until 2014, the centenary of his birth. The Fifth Notebook of Dylan Thomas makes this newly-discovered text available to readers and researchers for the first time. It contains the only existing MSS versions of Thomas's most challenging poems, 'I, in my intricate image' and 'Altarwise by owl-light', and fourteen other early poems. It contains facsimiles and full transcripts of the originals, is annotated throughout, and has a full scholarly introduction. Exploring the contexts of these brilliant and experimental lyrics – many with substantial reworkings and variant passages – this landmark publication sheds new light on the creative practice of one of the most important and well-known poets of the twentieth century.

Highly original and theoretically wide-ranging, this book offers new insights into the origins of poetry. Working with much of the significant primary and secondary literature in psychoanalysis, particularly the theories of Julia Kristeva, the book skillfully sketches out a psychoanalytically enhanced theory of poetics through close readings of the works of Dylan Thomas. Through an intense dialogue with pivotal poems, it offers a "subjectivist" theory of poetic language, one that focuses on the interrelation between meaning and subjectivity in the dynamics of the poetic text. In this scheme, the "genesis of the speaking subject" is held to be a reenactment of old and new fantasies of origins, the reality of which is inaccessible to us—buried, as it were, "below time." Among these fantasies, the author also recognizes the psychoanalytic fantasy of origins that guides her own project.

An introduction to a new way of modeling musical surfaces for theorists and for generating precompositional relationships for composers, this unique music theory reference work introduces, classifies, and enumerates graph theoretical models for musical transformations in compositional and analytical applications. It also provides a practical application of musical applications for students of graph theory and could serve as an introduction to the further cross-integration of these two disciplines. Of interest to scholars, advanced music theory students, and composers, this work endeavors to facilitate the expression and understanding of musical ideas by presenting an unexplored way of notating relationships between transformational objects that is not attached to specific compositional or analytical systems. Graph theoretical models of abstract musical transformations supplement and refine the ability to articulate orderings with pitch structures in analytical environments. An extended analysis of the opening section of Form IV: Broken Sequences by Stefan Wolpe is used as a demonstration. The use of these diagrams to generate compositional surfaces differs slightly from their use in analysis: an analytical model relates to a single musical surface, whereas compositional applications can be used to generate any potential surface derived from construction of the graphs.
