Jane Addams was an important reformer whose work for peace, social justice and prosperity won her the Nobel Prize. She is most well-known for establishing in 1889 a reform residence called Hull House, located on the West Side of Chicago. She also supported the movement for women's suffrage and was instrumental in the founding of several key peace organizations. Her activism has become legendary, but she also wrote eleven books. Newer Ideals of Peace is perhaps her most important written work, now finally back in print in a new edition. Although originally published in 1907, it still is astonishingly relevant to our own time. In this book, Addams presents in a compelling and concise format, the problems that America faces in the interaction between industrialism, militarism and patriotism. She also discusses the dynamics of ethnicity and race, especially in an urban context. Moreover, she provides sober, realistic solutions to these difficulties. Her reputation is once again restored to its rightful place by the reissue of this profound and far-seeing work. It undoubtedly will enlighten a whole new generation about the limitations and failures of modern government.

"True peace is not merely the absence of war, it is the presence of justice. "Jane Addams, a pioneer in the realms of social reform and peace activism, presents a compelling vision for a world free from the shackles of war and strife. Published in 1907, during a time marred by global conflicts and social unrest, Addams' insights remain as relevant and poignant today as they were over a century ago. In this seminal text, Addams challenges the prevailing notions of her time, advocating for a holistic approach to peace that transcends mere cessation of hostilities. Drawing upon her experiences as a social worker and activist, she argues that true peace can only be achieved through fostering justice, equality, and cooperation among nations and individuals alike. With eloquence and passion, Addams underscores the interconnectedness of all humanity and the imperative of cultivating empathy and understanding across cultural divides. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, Addams' ideas serve as a beacon of hope and wisdom. Her emphasis on the importance of grassroots movements, diplomatic dialogue, and collective action resonates deeply in an era marked by persistent geopolitical tensions and global challenges. Moreover, her advocacy for social justice and human rights reverberates with renewed urgency in the face of ongoing struggles for equality and dignity around the globe. Jane Addams's profound impact on society was not confined to the local sphere. Her tireless efforts to promote peace and social justice reverberated on the global stage, earning her the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. She was the first American woman to receive the award. This recognition cemented her status as a towering figure in the pantheon of social reformers, a beacon of hope for those striving to create a more equitable world. Let us heed Addams' call to action and work together to build a future where peace prevails and humanity flourishes.

The pragmatist philosopher Jane Addams (1860-1935) is celebrated as the founder of Hull House, the settlement house for disadvantaged people in Chicago, where for many years she put into practice her progressive ideas for social reform. Addams was also deeply involved in international peace efforts. Remaining a pacifist throughout World War I, she was a founder of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Her books and essays on peace are frequently cited but long out of print and hard to obtain. Interest in Jane Addams is rapidly growing. As the American government withdraws from international treaties, her call for international law and cooperation has a new relevance. And in our increasingly dangerous world, her call for peace is being heard again. This volume contains the most complete collection ever made of Addams's essays, articles, and speeches on peace and international relations, written between 1899 and 1935. >

Excerpt from Fundamental Peace Ideas The League of Nations may only be a first step in the direction of permanent peace, yet not a few persons seem doubtful of its utility. However, the league may be the lesser evil as compared with the old regime, which appears to have resulted in total failure after a very long and fair trial. Whatever be the ultimate outcome of the league and of the problems to be solved, the one encouraging thing is that all the people are thinking seriously on the subject and longing for some way to stop war. It may be true that lasting peace can only be secured when both people and leaders (sometimes the people lead the leaders) realize the necessity of peace and the senselessness of war. But to reach such a happy realiza tion of the truth what are we, the people, to do now? Already the dis eussions of the league (pro and con) have fertilized the soil; the minds of the people are open as never before and now is the supreme moment to sow peace seeds. The sooner, more thoroughly, and wider they are scattered, the better. In this way we may be able to so impress peace ideas upon everyone, as to avoid the terrible necessity of a future war, in which both sides become exhausted, as in the Thirty Years' War, which would be a much more horrible war than the present war. To escape such a catastrophe and make a league of nations or any kind of peace arrangements endure is preeminently an educational problem, and consists mainly in repeatedly filling the minds of the people, old and young, everywhere with fundamental peace conceptions. Shall we not begin at once and persist in doing this until political wars become as impossible in the future as religious wars are now? Excerpt from The Church and World Peace The world war is over. The legacy of war remains. The whirlwind Of death which left nothing it could destroy is passed, but ex hansted nations look with horror on the destruction wrought and turn with nerveless hands to the work of restoration. Has the war paid? That depends. If the transform ing ideals which inspired the will to conquer shall fade away, if the determination to rid the world of evil heritages and to give it a new start in freedom Shall be swallowed up in the maws of selfish interests; if, after all that has been done, nothing is left, after a while, but the same old world of international strife, a world of stark-naked materialism in which ancient wrongs, forgetfulness of God, and deification of the Strong, Shall again blur justice and the sense of human brotherhood, then the war has not paid. Excerpt from After the Peace Is the capitalist system breaking down as a method of production? The question may sound to most readers absurd, and when it is put in its concrete form, it may appear more absurd still. Are we nearing a point, within a few years, when it will be generally evident that, under the capitalist system, we can no longer obtain the food, fuel, clothes and houses necessary to maintain the dense populations of Europe at a civilized level of comfort and well-being? In Central Europe, in Italy and in Russia all intelligent men and women have been forced, by the dire experience of privation, to put this question, and to answer it according to their lights. In this country, though we are alarmed by the fall in the real value of money, and know that high prices mean the scarcity of goods, our case is still so far endurable that few of us have begun to question the ability of a society based on profit as its motive force, to provide us with our daily bread.
