A survey of the Gilded Age mansions of Newport, Rhode Island, for all who love grand houses. Newport Villas describes the architectural and social development of this summer resort town, the nexus of wealth and fashion at the end of the nineteenth century. All the accoutrements were the best that money could buy, whether it was Parisian frocks, meticulously groomed thoroughbred horses, or meals prepared by imported French chefs. To properly mount their entertainments, Newport's elite built "cottages" that ranged in size from thirty to seventy rooms. The country's most accomplished architects designed these seaside villas, many of them rivaling the great houses of Europe. Pictured here in abundant archival and new photographs, with accompanying floor plans, the houses cover the gamut of revival styles from Colonial Revival to Italian Renaissance Revival, from French Classical Revival to Georgian Revival.

This is the first comprehensive book on the resort houses of early Newport. High-end residential architecture built in Newport before 1875 has been largely neglected by architectural historians. This volume will help direct attention to these important early structures that not only reflect the growth of wealth in America, but also represent the architects' successful attempts at creating a vocabulary unique to American resort architecture. In 2009, author Michael C. Kathrens published an illustrated history on the later, more readily recognized houses built during the European Revival period from 1885 to 1935. He now focuses on what preceded that gilded age, starting with Stone Villa, the town's earliest purpose-built summer cottages, completed in 1835. Many more cottages were to follow. In fact, it often goes unnoticed that more seasonal abodes were constructed in Newport between 1865 and 1885 than during the later "Gilded Age".Among the thirty-six houses profiled in depth are Malbone (1848-1849), designed by Andrew Jackson Davis for Jonathan Prescott Hall, and Chateau-sur-Mer (1851-1852), originally designed by Seth C. Bradford for William Shepard Wetmore (Richard Morris Hunt made extensive alterations between 1869 and 1873 and again in 1880); as well as Cannon Hill for John Carter Brown (George Champlin Mason, c, 1850, Alt. Carpenter & Child, 1866), The Ledges for Robert M. Cushing (John Hubbard Sturgis, 1867), Linden Gate for Henry G. Marquand (Richard Morris Hunt, 1971-1873), The Orchard for Col. George R. Fearing (George Champlin Mason & Son, 1873-1874), the William Watts Sherman House for William Watts Sherman (Gambrill & Richardson, 1874-1875), Rives Villa for Grace W. Rives (Peabody & Stearns, 1875-1876), Snug Harbor for Rear Admiral Charles H. Baldwin, 1877-1878, Vinland for Catherine Lorrilard Wolfe (Peabody & Stearns 1882-1885, Alt. 1907-1910), and Chastellux for Lorillard Spencer II (Dudley Newton, 1889-1891).To supplement the rich archival images, Kathrens has commissioned new photography of extant houses. Aside from the 36 individual house chapters, there is a selected catalog of another 100 odd houses at the back of the book, supplemented by biographies of the architects whose work is included.
