An explosive look at the NFL Draft from the inside out that exposes the multilayered feeding frenzy that swarms around America's top college players. The Draft follows a handful of NFL hopefuls through the ups and downs of the 2004 college football season and the predraft process, culminating with the 2005 draft. Among the prospects are Virginia defensive end Chris Canty, who overcomes a devastating early-season knee injury to reestablish himself as a top draft hopeful, only to suffer a detached retina in a nightclub skirmish; and Fred Gibson, a talented but rail-thin Georgia wide receiver who struggles to put on the weight needed to go over the middle in the NFL. It's a complex environment, with college coaches attempting to protect their "student-athletes" from exploitation (while fully aware that they can only remain competitive if they attract NFL-caliber players to their schools), along with sports agents and NFL scouts trying to stay a step ahead of their competition. These parties provide a multi-angled view of the world of emerging NFL talent. The reader follows the season through the eyes of a host of power players and scouts, from veteran agent Pat Dye Jr. to Jerry Maguire clone Jack Scharf, to the coaching divisions of Florida State University and the University of Virginia--headed by longtime Bill Parcells disciple Al Groh. Also central to the narrative are the Atlanta Falcons and former executives Rich McKay and Tim Ruskell, who use a character-based evaluation system to set their draft board. These parallel stories weave together, culminating in draft weekend, to create a gripping and fascinating look at a world few see from the inside.

This is the eBook version of the printed book. This Element is an excerpt from Stumbling On Wins: Two Economists Expose the Pitfalls on the Road to Victory in Professional Sports (9780132357784) by David J. Berri and Martin B. Schmidt. Available in print and digital formats. Why NFL teams’ conventional approach to the draft just doesn’t work--and what they should be doing instead. If the NFL draft worked according to conventional wisdom, the greatest surplus value would be found at the top of the draft. However, the data suggests that picks in the top half of the second round have the greatest surplus value. This means teams in the first round, especially at the top, should be making every effort to trade down. They’ve traditionally done the opposite....

It has been reported that 40 million sports fans watch or listen to the NFL Draft for three days every year. For me personally, its a year round endeavor. Since 1979, my first year of involvement in the draft, it has grown and developed into its own type of cottage industry. The Draft (because of its addicting nature) has brought new revenue to the NFL. The driving force behind this new source of revenue has always been Draftniks like the late Joel Buschbaum, Mel Kiper and others like me. We are Draftniks and the unexpected affect the draft has had on us is an American story in itself. Its a story of a person creating something out of nothing and making it important (in this case) to the sports world. It's also a story about how interest in the draft was the driving force in my life, which helped me to indentify and deal with being Dyslectic.

The NFL draft features no action on the field. No passing, running, tackling, or kicking. Hey, there isn't even a field. Yet the draft has become more popular than many other sporting events, including the NBA and NHL playoff games, against which it goes head-to-head for viewers. In fact, the draft has spawned its own cottage industry in which names such as Gil Brandt, Mel Kiper Jr., and Mike Mayock have become as well known as any of the first-round selections. In On the Clock, Barry Wilner and Ken Rappoport chronicle the history of the proceedings. The veteran sportswriters take you from the first grab bag in 1936, when Philadelphia chose Heisman Trophy winner Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago only for him to decline to play in the NFL, to the 2014 draft—considered one of the deepest in talent ever. Along the 78-year journey, learn about the competitions for the top overall spot (Peyton Manning vs. Ryan Leaf), the unhappy No. 1s (John Elway and Tom Cousineau), the big flops (JaMarcus Russell), and the late-rounders-turned-superstars (Tom Brady). Meet the draft wizards, from Paul Brown to Bill Walsh and Jimmy Johnson, and read about the draft whiffs that cost personnel executives their jobs. On the Clock takes you behind the scenes at one of pro football’s most suspenseful annual events.

For a country obsessed with reality television, the NFL Draft might be the ultimate experience, a broadcast that blends real-life drama with the rooting interests of sports fans. Grown men cry on stage. Futures are determined live, with cameras rolling and small fortunes riding on each pick. Surprises show up. And for a few days, every team - and every fan too - seems to have some semblance of hope. Since moving the first round to primetime in 2010, the NFL Draft has been averaging about 40 million viewers annually, getting better television ratings than playoff games in other sports. Here's why: There's a story behind every pick, and often a bit of controversy too. Even the personalities themselves have narratives that are better than anything a script could conjure up. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. narrowly missed a career behind the scenes as a personnel man for his hometown Baltimore Colts. Todd McShay may have never made it to television without an injury that ended his playing career. The NFL Network's Mike Mayock was a second-generation draft pick, following a father who chose a teaching career over football. Ozzie Newsome was a Hall of Fame player who has been perhaps even better as a general manager for the Baltimore Ravens. In the NFL Draft, everyone has a story. But ultimately, I wanted my own. I went through questions on the infamous Wonderlic test, to a fantasy game where I'd amass millions, and all the way back to my beloved Cincinnati Bengals, a team notorious for bungling the draft. It was a dizzying ride through the drafts past and present, as every team turned an eye toward the future. My story, just like the 2012 NFL Draft itself, starts with the Colts. And they are on the clock...
