Misykât alAnwâr adalah salah satu Kitab Tasawuf karya Imam Ghazali. berbeda dengan Kitab lainnya, Kitab ini tidak tebal, kecil dan tipis. Fokus pembahasannya adalah interpretasi ayat tentang cahaya yang terdapat dalam Al-Quran Surat An- Nûr ayat 35. Dalam Mukaddimah, Imam Ghazali menjelaskan tujuan penulisan kitab ini yaitu untuk menguraikan sebuah ayat Alquran dan sebuah hadis, atas permintaan seorang murid terdekatnya. Hadis yang dimaksud adalah hadis tentang hijab. Jadi, tema umum Misykât alAnwâr adalah metafisika cahaya. Kitab ini merupakan salah satu di antara kitab Imam Al-Ghazali yang paling banyak dicurigai dan disorot oleh sebagian kecil ilmuwan modern. Meskipun dari kalangan tradisionalis dan sebagian besar sarjana modern lainnya tetap mengakuinya sebagai karya tulis Al-Ghazali. Kitab Misykatu al-Anwar dicurigai karena mereka melihat adanya ketidak-konsistenan keilmiahan dalam karya-karya tersebut. Di antara ilmuwan yang paling sibuk membedah masalah ini adalah orientalis Montgomeri Watt. Bahkan, secara khusus topik keotentikan kitab Misykât alAnwâr sebagai buah karya Al-Ghazali ini diangkat dalam tulisannya yang dimuat dalam journal of Royal Asiatic Society. Tapi, pada akhirnya seluruh argumen Montgomeri Watt dipatahkan oleh beberapa ulama modern. Ulama pakar Tasauf menempatkan karya ini pada maqâm (peringkat) tertinggi dalam kategori tasawuf bersama beberapa karya lain Al-Ghazali dan magnum opus sufi-sufi besar lainnya, seperti Fushûs alHikam, alFutûhât alMakkiyah karya Ibn Arabi, alInsân alKâmil karya alJîlî dan beberapa masterpiece lainnya dalam Ilmu Tasawuf.

Kitab Bidayah al-Hidayah karya Imam Al-Ghazali ini sangat penting dipelajari setiap umat Islam. Apalagi, bagi mereka yang baru mengenal Islam atau mereka yang berusaha selalu mendapatkan hidayah Allah dalam hidupnya. Penjelasan dalam kitab ini hampir sama dengan Ihya 'Ulum al-Din karya Al-Ghazali. Namun demikian, kitab Bidayah al-Hidayah ini adalah ringkasan dari magnum opus-nya tersebut. Setidaknya, ada tiga hal penting yang perlu diketahui umat dalam meraih hidayah (petunjuk) Allah tersebut dalam kehidupannya. Yakni, bagian adab-adab ketaatan, meninggalkan maksiat (dosa), dan cara bergaul dengan manusia. Secara keseluruhan, kitab Bidayah Al-Hidayah ini berisi tiga hal pokok tersebut. Masing-masing bagian pembahasan mencakup pergaulan seorang hamba dengan Sang Maha Pencipta dan dengan sesama manusia. Karena berisi seperti ringkasan, kitab Bidayah al-Hidayah ini cukup tipis bila dibandingkan karya-karya al-Ghazali lainnya. Kendati ukurannya kecil dan tipis, makna serta manfaatnya sangat besar bagi umat. Kandungan yang terdapat di dalamnya bagaikan harta karun yang terselip di antara halaman dan baris-barisnya. Pembahasan dalam bagian kitab yang sederhana ini memuat proses awal seorang hamba mendapatkan hidayah dari Allah SWT, di mana sang hamba membutuhkan pertolongan dan bimbingan dari-Nya. Juga, menjelaskan seputar halangan (pasif) atau rintangan (aktif) yang tersebar di sekitarnya, yaitu ketika sang hamba berusaha untuk mendekatkan diri kepada Sang Maha Pencipta, Allah SWT. Kemudian, dilanjutkan dengan pembahasan seputar kedudukan ilmu dan amal dalam pandangan kebenaran (al-Haq) beserta siasat nafsu yang cenderung menyesatkan para pencari ilmu dengan mengajaknya menempuh jalan yang salah. Sehingga, berakhir pada penyesalan dan penderitaan bagi hamba yang menuntutnya. Adapun inti dari pembahasan kitab ini adalah pentingnya adab (etika) dalam beramal dan beribadah, baik dalam pengertian yang bersifat sharih (sesuai dengan apa yang terdapat dalam Alquran dan sunah) maupun yang bersifat interpretatif dari pendapat penulis (Al-Ghazali). Imam Al-Ghazali mewanti-wanti setiap Muslim, khususnya mereka yang membutuhkan pertolongan Allah, untuk tidak tertipu dengan bujuk dan rayuan setan. Sebab, setan akan menjerat manusia dengan tali tipu dayanya sehingga ia akan tergelincir dari jalan yang benar. Al-Ghazali senantiasa mengingatkan para penuntut ilmu (Muslim) agar tidak terjerumus kepada hal-hal yang sesat. Ia menyebutkan, ada tiga jenis manusia dalam menuntut ilmu. Pertama, orang yang mencari ilmu untuk dijadikan bekal menuju akhirat. Ia menuntut ilmu semata-mata hanya mengharap ridha Allah dan kepentingan di negeri akhirat. Inilah orang yang beruntung. Kedua, orang yang mencari ilmu untuk dijadikan sarana bagi kepentingan kehidupan dunia yang bersifat sementara, yakni hanya meraih kejayaan, kedudukan, dan harta benda. Ia adalah orang yang berilmu dan merasa hebat dengan apa yang telah diraihnya. Padahal, kata Al-Ghazali, orang yang demikian ini adalah orang yang sesat. Dirinya akan senantiasa khawatir dengan akhir hidupnya jatuh miskin, melarat, dan lainnya. Ketiga, orang yang dirinya telah dikuasai oleh setan. Ia menjadikan ilmunya sebagai sarana untuk memperbanyak harta benda, meraih kedudukan yang bisa dibangga-banggakan, dan menghimpun banyak pengikut yang bisa dimanfaatkan. Ia menggunakan ilmunya dalam setiap kesempatan untuk meraih kepentingan duniawi meski yakin ia mempunyai kedudukan yang tinggi di sisi Allah karena merasa dirinya seorang yang alim (ulama). Menurut Al-Ghazali, hidayah Allah tak akan bisa diperoleh jika seseorang tak pernah memahami jati dirinya. Memahami siapa dirinya, Zat yang menciptakannya, dan semua yang terkandung di alam semesta ini. Wa Allahu A'lam.

Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali wrote the philosophy of gnostics-illumination (isyraqiyyah) in the book of Misykat al-Anwar. Not exaggerated, with the book of his work, al-Ghazali deserve entry in the list of names of the great philosophers of classical Islam.
