Excerpt from Niccolo Dei Lapi: Or, the Last Days of the Forentine Republic I visited the palace of the sheriff, where, in times more re mote, the priors, or presidents of the republic, occupied the first story, in the halls of which, they assembled in council; I saw those court-yard steps of marble covered with a roof as rough as though they had been the stairway of a peasant, ' those massive pavements of the court, in the centre of which. This book includes most of the contributions presented at a conference on “Univ- sities and Science in the Early Modern Period” held in 1999 in Valencia, Spain. The conference was part of the “Five Centuries of the Life of the University of Valencia” (Cinc Segles) celebrations, and from the outset we had the generous support of the “Patronato” (Foundation) overseeing the events. In recent decades, as a result of a renewed attention to the institutional, political, social, and cultural context of scienti?c activity, we have witnessed a reappraisal of the role of the universities in the construction and development of early modern science. In essence, the following conclusions have been reached: (1) the attitudes regarding scienti?c progress or novelty differed from country to country and follow differenttrajectoriesinthecourseoftheearlymodernperiod;(2)institutionsofhigher learning were the main centers of education for most scientists; (3) although the universities were sometimes slow to assimilate new scienti?c knowledge, when they didsoithelpednotonlytoremovethesuspicionthatthenewsciencewasintellectually subversivebutalsotomakesciencearespectableandevenprestigiousactivity;(4)the universities gave the scienti?c movement considerable material support in the form of research facilities such as anatomical theaters, botanical gardens, and expensive instruments; (5) the universities provided professional employment and a means of support to many scientists; and (6) although the relations among the universities and the academies or scienti?c societies were sometimes antagonistic, the two types of institutionsoftenworkedtogetherinharmony, performingcomplementaryratherthan competing functions; moreover, individuals moved from one institution to another, as did knowledge, methods, and scienti?c practices.

This work is a revealing combination of biographies and topical essays that describe the outstanding and often-overlooked contributions of women to the science, politics, and culture of the Renaissance. Encyclopedia of Women in the Renaissance: Italy, France, and England is the first first comprehensive reference devoted exclusively to the contributions of women to European culture in the period between 1350 and 1700. Focusing principally on early modern women in England, France, and Italy, it offers over 135 biographies of the extraordinary women of those times. Encyclopedia of Women in the Renaissance provides vivid portraits of well known women such as Catherine of Siena, Joan of Arc, Mary Queen of Scots, and Christine de Pizan. Also included are less familiar but equally important women like Elena Lucrezia Cornaro, the first woman in Europe to earn a doctorate; the renowned Renaissance painter Artemisia Gentileschi; and the acclaimed author of medical textbooks and midwife to a French queen, Louise Boursier. Based on the latest research and enhanced with thematic essays, this groundbreaking work casts our understanding of women's lives and roles in Renaissance history and culture in a provocative new light.

The Metaphysics And Natural Philosophy Of John Buridan written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-16 with History categories.

This book is a collection of papers on the metaphysics and natural philosophy of John Buridan (ca. 1295-1361), one of the most innovative and influential thinkers of the later Middle Ages. It brings together original contributions by fifteen Buridan scholars on a number of central topics in the Buridanian corpus, including the theory of universals, the role of definitions in scientific practice, necessity and probability, time, the natural order, the theory of motion, time and infinity, certitude, sensation, dreams, and volition. The papers provide a unified picture of Buridan's non-logical writings, most of which are still unedited, emphasizing throughout his particular methods of presenting and solving philosophical problems. The result suggests that Buridan's reputation for brilliance in logic and semantics deserves to be extended to other areas of philosophy, and that his work deserves closer study. Contributors include: Paul J.J.M. Bakker, Joël Biard, Dirk-Jan Dekker, Peter King, Gyula Klima, Simo Knuuttila, Gerhard Krieger, John E. Murdoch, Fabienne Pironet, Olaf Pluta, Rolf Schönberger, Peter G. Sobol, Edith Dudley Sylla, Johannes M.M.H. Thijssen, and Jack Zupko.

John Buridan written by Jack Zupko and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

John Buridan (ca. 1300-1361) was the most famous philosophy teacher of his time, and probably the most influential. In this important new book, Jack Zupko offers the first systematic exposition of Buridan's thought to appear in any language. Zupko uses Buridan's own conception of the order and practice of philosophy to depict the most salient features of his thought, beginning with his views on the nature of language and logic and then illustrating their application to a series of topics in metaphysics, natural philosophy, and ethics. Part 1 of John Buridan considers the picture of language and logic developed in Buridan's Summulae de dialectica. Buridan systematically overhauled the logic he first learned and later taught at the University of Paris, redeeming the older tradition of Aristotelian logic in terms, propositions, and arguments. This made possible newer and more powerful forms of philosophical discourse. The second part of this volume provides a reading of Buridan's philosophy, showing how this discourse shaped his treatment of speculative questions such as the relation between soul and body, the nature of knowledge, the proper subject of psychology, the function of the virtues, and the freedom of the will. This groundbreaking book is sure to become the standard work on John Buridan.
