Acetylcholine Receptors in Health and Disease opens with a review of the results of an investigation on the cholinergic modulation of excitatory synaptic transmission in the frog tectum carried out in the laboratory of neurophysiology at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Experiments were done in vivo on the common grass frog Rana temporaria. Next, the authors review the function of M4 MR and discuss possible detection methods. M4 MR regulated locomotion is studied in conjunction with recent data on consequences to biorhythms. In the closing chapter, the authors review the environmental enrichment paradigm in rodents, as well as their effects on neurobiological, physiological and behavioral variables in preclinical studies.

Modern neuroimaging tools allow unprecedented opportunities for understanding brain neuroanatomy and function in health and disease. Each available technique carries with it a particular balance of strengths and limitations, such that converging evidence based on multiple methods provides the most powerful approach for advancing our knowledge in the fields of clinical and cognitive neuroscience. The scope of this book is not to provide a comprehensive overview of methods and their clinical applications but to provide a "snapshot" of current approaches using well established and newly emerging techniques.

This open access book presents the roles and mechanisms of signal transduction triggered by nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) stimulation in neuroprotection against toxic effects of risk factors of neurodegenerative diseases. Accumulating evidence suggests that nAChRs in the CNS play important roles not only in excitatory neurotransmission but also in neuronal survival and related functions. Neuroprotection mediated by nAChRs in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease is the major topic of this book. In response to rapidly evolving areas in clinical and laboratory neuropharmacology and neurochemistry, this volume provides in-depth coverage of neuroprotection in basic research and future developments in the clinical application of effective neuroprotective strategies in neurodegenerative diseases. This work appeals to both basic and clinical researchers in several fields, such as neuroscience, neurology, and pharmacology.

Different techniques from various disciplines have made possible the analysis of the structure and the multiplicity of functions performed by ligand- and voltage-gated ion channels and receptors. This book covers one of the fastest growing fields in the molecular neurosciences - that of the ligand-gated ion channels (LGIC). Future trends, which are analyzed in each chapter, encompass the likely strategies for decoding structure-function relationships of the receptor molecule, the establishment of the differences in ionic selectivity and the mechanisms of permeability through the pore, and the possible use of genetic kindredness between actylcholine receptors of different species for the diagnosis of new genetic diseases.

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are key players in both cognitive and autonomic processes. In the cognitive domains of the brain, destruction of cholinergic inputs or disruption of nAChR function result in cognitive deficits as observed in Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, brain trauma and aging. By contrast, moderate activation of nAChRs supports neuroprotection and improves cognitive functions. In addition, neuronal nAChRs are also expressed in important autonomic centers such as the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) that support autonomic visceral reflexes and homeostasis. In this study, the underlying mechanisms of nAChR activation and its pharmacology were investigated in the hippocampus and the NTS, critical brain regions supporting cognitive and autonomic functions, respectively. Collectively, these studies may help in developing new therapeutic strategies to selectively target nAChR-associated pathways that support cognitive and autonomic functions in health and disease.
