Ganz lange sitzen bleiben würde ich, mit Orsoy im Bauch und den Niederrhein im Kopp." So beendet der Autor seinen nostalgischen Rundgang durch die kleine niederrheinische Stadt seiner Kindheit und Jugend. Er nimmt den Leser mit und zeigt ihm die Straßen und Plätze, die Menschen von damals - jeder eine besondere Niederrhein-Gestalt. Er lässt den Leser in die Kneipen schauen, wo sich das örtliche Leben verdichtet findet. Beim Sonntagsspaziergang über die Stadtwälle sieht der Leser Orsoy aus anderer Perspektive. Und wenn es aus Orsoy hinaus nach Drießen geht auf dem Rheindeich, dann tut sich die Weite des Niederrheins auf mit schwarz-weißen Kühen auf grünem Grund und tuckernden Schiffen auf dem Rhein und wehender Wäsche im Fahrtwind. Das wird den Leser vielleicht an seine eigene Jugend erinnern, an die Orte und Menschen, die ihm halfen beim Aufwachsen und Hineinfinden in das Leben. Das muss Heimat sein, der Gefühlsgrund unseres Lebens.

The value of Plutarch’s perception of physical reality and his attitude towards the natural spectacle Plutarch was very interested in the natural world around him, not only in terms of its elementary composition and physical processes, but also with respect to its providential ordering and marvels. His writings teach us a lot about his perception of physical reality and about his attitude to the natural spectacle. He found his greatest inspiration in the ontological and epistemological framework of Plato’s Timaeus, but a wide range of other authors were also of seminal interest to his project. Moreover, the highly literary value of Plutarch’s natural philosophical writings should not be underrated. It is therefore not surprising that recently scholars have started to reassess the ancient scientific value of Plutarch’s natural philosophical writings. There are several reasons why the chronicle is particularly suited as the topic of a yearbook. In the first place there is its ubiquity: all over Europe and throughout the Middle Ages chronicles were written, both in Latin and in the vernacular, and not only in Europe but also in the countries neighbouring on it, like those of the Arabic world. Secondly, all chronicles raise such questions as by whom, for whom, or for what purpose were they written, how do they reconstruct the past, what determined the choice of verse or prose, or what kind of literary influences are discernable in them. Finally, many chronicles have been beautifully illuminated, and the relation between text and image leads to a wholly different set of questions.The yearbook The Medieval Chronicle aims to provide a representative survey of the on-going research in the field of chronicle studies, illustrated by examples from specific chronicles from a wide variety of countries, periods and cultural backgrounds.
