Karl Joël ( 1864 - 1934 ) war ein deutscher Philosoph. Die Philosophie des 19. Jahrhunderts reicht von der Romantik und dem Idealismus als einen der Höhepunkte der deutschen Philosophie, über Positivismus, Materialismus und so starke Einzeldenker wie Schopenhauer, Nietzsche und Kierkegaard bis hin zum Neukantianismus, Pragmatismus und zur Lebensphilosophie. Sie zerfällt damit in so viele verschiedene Richtungen, dass sie nicht mehr mit einem zusammenfassenden Periodenbegriff bezeichnet und zusammengefasst werden kann. In dieser zu Unrecht vergessenen Nietzsche Studie charakterisiert Joël den aussergewöhnlichen Einzeldenker seiner Zeit mit den Worten: " wie ein zürnender Gott steht er vor den Menschen; nicht ungestraft nahen Sie seinem Angesichte; denn er setzt alle in Flammen, macht alle erschauern in Entzücken oder Entsetzen; blendender Glanz strahlt aus seinem Auge, doch von seinem Kampfschild grinst ein Medusenhaupt." Gemäß Joël kann eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Verhältnis Nietzsches zur Romantik nur erfolgen, indem wir ihn und uns von "seiner verwirrenden Einzigartikeit erlösen" ihn "gruppieren, vergleichen, ihm ein Seitenstück und ein Gegenbild geben, daß seine Art und Eigenart zugleich herausspringen." Die Studie ist durchgehend ein Versuch, die Verachtung des Romantischen durch den Spätromantiker Nietzsche herauszuarbeiten, denn "die Romantiker suchen das Weibliche bis zur Sentimentalität und Nietzsche suchte die Männlichkeit bis zur Brutalität. Was Nietzsche wollte mit seiner ganzen Lebensarbeit, das ist ja Vermännlichung der Kultur". Sorgfältig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1908.
