Bound to the queen of Chandela by a forbidden soul bond that saved her when she was a child, Katyani has never fallen short of what’s expected of her—becoming the best guardswoman the Garuda has ever seen and an advisor to the crown prince when he ascends to the throne. But when the latest assassination attempt against the royals leaves them with a faceless body and no leads to the perpetrator, Katyani is unwillingly shipped off to guard the Chandela princes in Acharya Mahavir’s esteemed monastic school in Nandovana, a forest where monsters have roamed unchecked for generations. Katyani wants nothing more than to return to her duties, especially when the Acharya starts asking questions about her past. The only upside of her stay are her run-ins with Daksh, the Acharya’s son, who can’t stop going on about the rules and whose gaze makes her feel like he can see into her soul. But when Katyani and the princes are hurriedly summoned back to Chandela before their training is complete, tragedy strikes and Katyani is torn from the only life she has ever known. Alone and betrayed in a land infested with monsters, Katyani must find the answers to her past so she can save what she loves and forge her own destiny. Bonds can be broken, but debts must be repaid.

This book fills a long-standing gap in Arabic-Islamic studies. Following the informative and entertaining style of adab literature and based on a large number of relevant sources from a wide range of genres, Hasan Shuraydi presents a panoramic view of relevant themes that concern youth and old age in Medieval Arabic literature intended for both specialists and non-specialists. A pattern of binary oppositions runs through such themes, e.g., black/white, male/female, husband/wife, sacred/profane, paradise/this world, ignorance/wisdom, past/present, young/old, new/old, health/disease, sappy/dry, permitted/forbidden, lust/chastity, obedience/disobedience, experience/inexperience, folly/reason, sobriety/intoxication, parent/child, celibacy/marriage, present life/hereafter. Themes discussed include: aging, ambition, aphrodisiacs, beauty, education, feminist trends, hair dyeing, homosexuality, honoring age, jihad, life stages, longevity, love, marriage, sex.

And then there were three . . . Once upon a time four sisters confronted their demonic father in the shadowy and enchanting other-world of Everwhere. The battle between them ended in devastating losses. The scars they carried from that fatal night slowly pushed the remaining sisters apart. But now they're being drawn back together - reuniting to try and resurrect what one of them has lost . . . On the night of their twenty-first birthday, when the clock strikes midnight, when October ticks into November, when autumn wilts into winter, when All Hallows' Eve becomes All Saints' Day, the sisters Grimm will reach the zenith of their powers. On this night, at this time, in the ethereal mist-bound realm of Everwhere, anything is possible. But when dark magic is released, tragedy will strike once more. ROBERT DINSDALE, author of The Toymakers 'A very grown up fairy-tale with more than a nod to Angela Carter and Philip Pullman . . . spellbinding.' STARBURST 'Darkly beguiling . . . perfect for fans of rich and imaginative fantasy books akin to Erin Morgenstern and Neil Gaiman.' CULTUREFLY 'An entertaining and clever examination of folklore, female empowerment, and the system that attempts to keep women in check.' ...Quoth the Raven, ""Nevermore."" ""The Raven"" is a classic narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. First published in January 1845, the poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow fall into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word ""Nevermore."" The poem makes use of a number of folk, mythological, religious, and classical references. Poe claimed to have written the poem very logically and methodically, intending to create a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes, as he explained in his 1846 follow-up essay, ""The Philosophy of Composition."" The poem was inspired in part by a talking raven in the novel Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty by Dickens.

As two octogenarian fishermen float Colorado’s Green River in their antiquated wooden boat on what will prove to be the last day of their lives, one terror haunts them: veterans of World War Two who experienced wholesale death, neither fear that, but the possibility of extinction in a nursing home terrifies them. For Dr. Tyrone Washington, NAU Professor Emeritus and Morgan Perkins, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature, the specter grinds away as they float inexorably toward the thundering roar of Disaster Falls. While spirits rise and sink in search of a plan to avoid the home, the the anglers are visited by a huge Raven of superior intelligence and utter devotion to the sacred creeds of Ravenism. Outranking humans, the snobbish bird laughs at their childish philosophies. “After all,” he cries, “Raven was created in the image of God!” Suddenly he notes: “One human is light-colored, the other, dark; why would men of a different feather flock together?“ Out of curiosity the Raven decides to haunt the fishermen, comes to understand their language, and, sensing their fears, becomes a muse who can inspire an answer to their problem. But how can he pervade the minds of men and trigger the solution? Their aging is relentless, and time is short...
