The history of the smaller European countries is rather neglected in the teaching of European history at university level. We are therefore pleased to announce the publication of the first comprehensive history of the Low Countries - in English - from Roman Times to the present. Remaining politically and culturally fragmented, with its inhabitants speaking Dutch, French, Frisian, and German, the Low Countries offer a fascinating picture of European history en miniature. For historical reasons, parts of northern France and western Germany also have to be included in the "Low Countries," a term that must remain both broad and fluid, a convenient label for a region which has seldom, if ever, composed a unified whole. In earlier ages it as even more difficult to the region set parameters, again reflecting Europe as a whole, when tribes and kingdoms stretched across expanses not limited to the present states of Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Nevertheless, its parts did demonstrate many common traits and similar developments that differentiated them from surrounding countries and lent them a distinct character. Internationally, the region often served both as a mediator for and a buffer to the surrounding great powers, France, Britain, and Germany; an important role still played today as Belgium and the Netherlands have increasingly become involved in the broader process of European integration, in which they often share the same interest and follow parallel policies. This highly illustrated volume serves as an ideal introduction to the rich history of the Low Countries for students and the generally interested reader alike.

History is an important, dangerous, and fragile subject. Historical thought can be censored in widely diverging political and historiographical contexts, as historians are well aware. Yet the problems of censorship, often thought to be obvious, are rarely studied. Filling a significant void, this guide supplies information on the censorship of historical thought and the fate of persecuted historians in over 130 countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and from 1945 to 2000. With each entry providing a chronological overview of cases and giving a full listing of sources, the book is the first systematic effort to overview the repression of historical thought. Aiming to encompass all countries in which censorship and persecution have taken place, De Baets sketches a world map of repression that goes beyond the well-known and well-studied cases. It assembles scattered data from three types of sources: the works of censors and censored, historical and biographical dictionaries and historiographical surveys, and reports from international human rights organizations. Showing the universality of historical censorship and its infinite variety in amount and degree, the book also provides a basis for further comparative research.

Op het einde van de negentiende eeuw barstte de sociale kwestie in alle hevigheid los. De katholieke regeringen moesten nu wel wetgevende maatregelen nemen. Hoewel de technische inhoud van de wetten genoegzaam bekend is, geldt dat veel minder voor de onderliggende ideeën en argumentaties in de sociaal-politieke debatten. Dit boek behandelt daarom de politieke en wetenschappelijke theorievorming over de sociale wetgeving in België rond 1900. Het wil illustreren dat sociaal beleid veel meer betekende dan een droog technisch antwoord op louter praktische uitdagingen. Ook sociaal-politieke filosofie en politieke cultuur speelden een rol bij het tot stand komen van sociale wetten. De politieke cultuur van de volle negentiende eeuw had, op sociaal-economisch vlak, gedweept met het principe van de 'vrijheid van arbeid'. Voor de arbeiders op de werkvloer echter - zo luidde althans de kritiek - betekende die vrijheid van arbeid vaak een vergiftigd geschenk, ... geen echte vrijheid, maar veeleer een geketende gevangenschap. Dat kwam door de veeleer atomistische aspiratie van de politiek. Rond 1900 veranderde dat. Voortaan zou het politieke debat worden uitgedaagd door wat de auteur noemt een 'holistische bekoring'. Het is die verschuiving in de politieke cultuur die het boek nauwgezet bestudeert. Het biedt een schets van een even boeiende als kronkelende weg, de grillige weg die werd afgelegd van een individualistische 'vrijheid van arbeid' naar 'georganiseerde en gesubsidieerde vrijheid'.
