Editor Nicole Rudick, in a kind of collaboration with the artist, has assembled a gorgeous and detailed mosaic of Saint Phalle's visual and textual works from a trove of paintings, drawings, sketches and writings, many previously unpublished or long unavailable, that trace her mistakes and successes, her passions and her radical sense of joy. Born in France, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was raised in New York and began making art at age 23, pursuing a revelatory vision informed both by the monumental works of Antonin Gaudí and the Facteur Cheval, and by aspects of her own life. In addition to her Tirs ("shooting paintings") and Nanas and her celebrated large-scale projects--including the Stravinsky Fountain at the Centre Pompidou, Golem in Jerusalem and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany--Saint Phalle produced writing and works on paper that delve into her own biography: childhood and her break with her family, marriage to Harry Mathews, motherhood, a long collaborative relationship with Jean Tinguely, numerous health crises and her late, productive years in Southern California. Innovative and pioneering, French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) created an extensive and complex body of work over her five decade-long career. Her work received international recognition as early as 1961 when it was included in the important exhibition 'The Art and Assemblage' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The unique and spectacular oeuvre of Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) comprises such well-known works as her Shooting Paintings, Nanas, and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany. The Grotto in Hanover, which was redesigned and redecorated according to her plans, is the last large-scale project completed during her lifetime. This imposing artistic legacy is situated in the Baroque section of the Herrenhausen Gardens, one of Germany's most beautiful park landscapes. Originally composed of shells, crystals, glass, and minerals, the Grotto's interior decor was destroyed during the 18th century. Transformed by Niki de Saint Phalle, the site has once again become a place of enchantment. The artist decorated the octagonal central space and the two rooms flanking it on the right and left with magnificent mosaics made of colored glass, mirrors, pebbles, and a host of painted and sculpted figures.
