Written over several decades and collected together for the first time, these richly detailed contextual studies by a leading historian of science examine the diverse ways in which cultural values and political and professional considerations impinged upon the construction, acceptance and applications of nineteenth century evolutionary theory. They include a number of interrelated analyses of the highly politicised roles of embryos and monsters in pre- and post- Darwinian evolutionary theorizing, including Darwin’s; several studies of the intersection of Darwinian science and its practitioners with issues of gender, race and sexuality, featuring a pioneering contextual analysis of Darwin’s theory of sexual selection; and explorations of responses to Darwinian science by notable Victorian women intellectuals, including the crusading anti-feminist and ardent Darwinian, Eliza Lynn Linton, the feminist and leading anti-vivisectionist Frances Power Cobbe, and Annie Besant, the bible-bashing, birth-control advocate who confronted Darwin’s opposition to contraception at the notorious Knowlton Trial.

This volume considers the relationship between the development of evolution and its historical representations by focusing on the so-called Darwinian Revolution. The very idea of the Darwinian Revolution is a historical construct devised to help explain the changing scientific and cultural landscape that was ushered in by Charles Darwin’s singular contribution to natural science. And yet, since at least the 1980s, science historians have moved away from traditional “great man” narratives to focus on the collective role that previously neglected figures have played in formative debates of evolutionary theory. Darwin, they argue, was not the driving force behind the popularization of evolution in the nineteenth century. This volume moves the conversation forward by bringing Darwin back into the frame, recognizing that while he was not the only important evolutionist, his name and image came to signify evolution itself, both in the popular imagination as well as in the work and writings of other evolutionists. Together, contributors explore how the history of evolution has been interpreted, deployed, and exploited to fashion the science behind our changing understandings of evolution from the nineteenth century to the present.

Excerpt from Evolution: A Lecture Read Before the Nineteenth Century Club, in the City of New York, May 25, 1886 Another argument of the biologist is founded on the observation of embryos or germs in their progressive stages, each of which is supposed to represent some one of the progressive types of life. This is especially conspicuous in the animal world. Thus the human embryo, as it is con tended, furnishes in its growth a miniature transcript of the order in which animal life has been evolved through its several stages, from the lowest up to man. Here again there is no agreement as to the facts; some contending that the transition from one stage of the embryo to another, as in the advance from the simpler to the more complex, is a progress from the generic to the specific, or, as the evolutionist would say, from the homogeneous to the heterogeneous. But, admitting this progress, it would be as true of logical as it is of natural growth, and is as consistent with the evolution of a plan which is provided for in the constitution of each indi vidual germ, as it is with the influence of environment upon one indefinitely variable nucleus or cell. Evolution And Social Life written by Tim Ingold and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-07 with Social Science categories.

Evolution is among the most central and most contested of ideas in the history of anthropology. This book charts the fortunes of the idea from the mid-nineteenth century to recent times. By comparing biological, historical, and anthropological approaches to the study of human culture and social life, it lays the foundation for their effective synthesis. Far ahead of its time when first published, the book anticipates debates at the forefront of contemporary thinking. Revisiting the work after almost thirty years, Tim Ingold offers a substantial new preface that describes how the book came to be written, how it was received and its bearing on later developments. Unique in scope and breadth of theoretical vision, Evolution and Social Life cuts across the boundaries of natural science and the humanities to provide a major contribution both to the history of anthropological and social thought, and to contemporary debate on the relationship between human nature, culture, and social life.

Studies in the Babi and Baha'i Religions, Volume 12This is the first and only serious, academic treatment of the subject of evolution in the teachings of the Bahá'í Faith. The authors provide an exhaustive discussion of the historical context of 'Abdu'l-Bahá's remarks on and objections to the Darwinian theories of his time, presenting modern alternatives to contemporary interpretations of his remarksKeven Brown's essay investigates the religious controversy that has surrounded the subject of evolution, both within Christianity and within Islam, during 'Abdu'l-Bahá's time. He provides a valuable summary of the views of those the Master called "the philosophers of the East."Then, from the perspective of modern science, Eberhard von Kitzing discusses the impact of evolution on the study of biology and suggests that 'Abdu'l-Bahá's teachings have been widely misunderstood. This book will expand and deepen discussion on evolution in the Bahá'í community.
