Nineteenth century Spain deserves wider readership. Bedevilled by lost empires, wars, political instability and frustrated modernisation, the country appeared backward in relation to northern Europe and even in relation to much of its own geographical periphery. This new history, the first survey of its kind in English in more than a hundred years, offers a fresh perspective on this century, showing how and why elements of backwardness and modernity ran in parallel through Spain. Bounded by the military and imperial crises of 1808 and 1898, this study pays special attention to the experience of war on politics and society, and integrates the latest historical debates in its analysis.

Excerpt from Spain in the Nineteenth Century The present volume will be the last of this Nineteenth-Century series of Historical Narratives. I again disclaim, as I have done in several previous prefatory Notes, any right to be classed as an "historian," and deprecate being judged by the high standards properly applied to those who look beneath the surface of events, and elucidate the causes of history. I would like to say, however, that I claim one merit for this book, - that there is no other, so far as I know, which supplies what it offers to my readers, namely, a general view of what has happened in Spain during the present century. There are many excellent books, both of history and travel, which tell us about Spain in the days of her glory, - about Ferdinand and Isabella, the expulsion of the Moors, the Peninsular War, the Alhambra, Bull-fights, and the Cathedrals; but there seems to be nowhere, a continuous history of the period about which I have been writing. I have had to dig out my facts one by one, from contemporary sources; or, to use a more feminine simile, I have drawn my threads out of tangled skein. I trust my readers will not find the story too involved to be interesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Pascual de Gayangos (1809-97) celebrated Spanish Orientalist and polymath, is recognised as the father of the modern school of Arabic studies in Spain. He gave Islamic Spain its own voice, for the first time representing Spain's 'other' from 'within' not from without. This collection, the first major study of Gayangos, celebrates the 200th anniversary of his birth.Covering a wide range of subjects, it reflects the multiple fields in which Gayangos was involved: scholarship on the culture of Islamic and Christian Spain; history, literature, art; conservation and preservation of national heritage; formation of archives and collections; education; tourism; diplomacy and politics. Amalgamating and understanding Gayangos's multiple identities, it reinstates his importance for cultural life in nineteenth-century Spain, Britain and North America. It is also argued that Gayangos's scholarly achievements and his influence have a political dimension. His work must be seen in relation to the quest for a national identity which marked the nineteenth century: what was the significance of Spain's Islamic past, and the Imperial Golden Age to the culture of modern Spain? The chapters, informed by post-colonial theory, reception theory and theories of national identity, uncover some of the complexities of the process that shaped Spain's national identity. In the course of this book, Gayangos is shown to be a figure with many facets and several intellectual lives: Arabist, historian, liberal, researcher, editor, numismatist, traveller, translator, diplomat, perhaps a spy, a generous collaborator and one of Spain's greatest bibliophiles.

It demonstrates that, even though Washington Irving's sojourn in Spain from 1826 until 1829 marked a distinct shift in the literary commodification of things Spanish, the transition from an enlightened to a romantic representation of Spain was a process triggered by a group of writers who produced Spanish travel narratives of lasting influence.

Designed as a companion to the acclaimed Spain in the Twentieth-Century World (Greenwood Press, 1980), this volume is a survey of 19th-century Spanish diplomacy. Although the 19th century is often considered highly fragmented in Spanish history, this distinguished set of writers shows that insofar as diplomacy goes, Spain has followed very consistent lines of activities throughout the century. Spaniards have attempted to use diplomacy to further national and international objectives with mixed results. This study adds insight into the national political affairs of Spain while dealing directly with the events of such regions as North Africa, Santo Domingo, Mexico, the United States, Portugal, France, Great Britain, Chile, and Peru. It is also an important contribution to the diplomacy of the 19th-century, post-Napoleonic Mediterranean world.
