This work looks at the shared vision Julius Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah had about the future of Africa. It looks at their quest for continental unity and the different paths they took to achieve the same goal; how they tried to transform their countries into socialist societies, emphasising the imperative need for socialism as the basis for development not only for their countries but for the continent as a whole; and what Africa's place should be in the global community. Other subjects covered include the political awakening of Nkrumah when he was a student in the United States and the influence people of African descent in the diaspora had on him; the ties Shirley Graham Du Bois, the widow of Dr. W.E. B. Du Bois, had with Nkrumah and Nyerere and how the military coup against Nkrumah affected her life including her decision to become a citizen of Tanzania after she was forced to leave Ghana following Nkrumah's ouster; as well as a number of other subjects about Africa which linked Nkrumah and Nyerere when both leaders were in power and even after Nkrumah was overthrown. Written by a Tanzanian who witnessed some of the major events which took place on the continent in the sixties when African countries were emerging from colonial rule and when the liberation struggle in the countries of southern Africa was most intense during the seventies and even in the eighties in the case of Namibia and apartheid South Africa, the book is also a reflection of the spirit of the times when Africans saw themselves as one, united in their desire to see their continent free even if they did not identify themselves as Pan-Africanists and did not know exactly what the term Pan-Africanism meant. What mattered was the spirit: We are all Africans, united as one people and determined to see Africa free.

This book explores what constitutes contemporary African social and political philosophy with regard to its meaning, aims, sources, and relevance for today’s Africa. Kasanda denounces conventional approaches considering these either as a subcategory of general philosophy or as the ideological attempts of individual African leaders and professional philosophers, such as Nkrumah, Nyerere, Senghor, Fanon, Hountondji and Towa. On the contrary, Kasanda defines contemporary African social and political philosophy as an inclusive reflection of African communities with regard to power and equitable modes of social and political organization in order to promote human excellence for everyone. This perspective also includes the criticism of social and political concepts in use within African communities. The author postulates that contemporary African social and political philosophy relies on the legacy of precolonial African societies, as well as on the contribution of the diaspora throughout the world. Which European and non-European ideas and practices facilitated the shaping of European unity? Or rather, which pursuits led to deadlocks in the cooperation between states? The book seeks answers to these questions by surveying the historical attempts at realizing supranational patterns of governance in Europe since the Middle Ages. The main focus is on the nineteenth and twentieth century organizational models of European unification. The analysis draws on an abundance of historical and legal source material. While the author encourages critical thinking about European integration, the exploration is admittedly based on specific values. Éva Bóka claims that the struggle for the humanization of power with its democratic creative force has been the major driver in the development of the system of liberties and the idea of European unity. The analysis of the historical process up to the Lisbon Treaty (2007) with the recognition of common, shared, and supported competences meets the author’s set of values to a great extent.
