No Cats in Vietnam, the Memoir of a Straightleg Engineer, is a memoir that really was begun as a response to someones suggestion. I swear. I have thought from time to time of writing something longer than a newspaper article on subjects ranging from Vietnam to gun control to Conflict Resolution, but this has seemed a necessary first step. Besides, I can get away with writing about my own life when that might be an impossible task on some other subject. It is good training, as I was told many, many times in the army. Seriously, folks, this is my autobiography, with as many warts as I can stand. I make no claim to be complete or completely honest. This is simply the way the book turned out. There were things I chose to omit, and I know there will be people who will take offense, but that is the way this book has to be. I have gone back in time as far as I could go without resorting to hypnosis to help me recall things that are only shadows. I have actually contemplated doing this, especially to bring back a few hours of my year in Vietnam, but it has not been recommended to me. I leave it at that. Without recounting the entire tale, I should say only that this book is an account of my entire life up until now, with as much accuracy and humor as I can muster. If anyones life is interesting, mine should be; I have been enough places and gone through enough excitement and pain to make it so. Enjoy.

In this evocative, unflinching memoir, laced with humor, anger, love, and the unforgettable story of Mé a cat rescued from the battle of Hue, Laurence recalls coming of age during the war years as a journalist and as a man. Along the way, he clarifies the murky history of the war and the role that journalists played in altering its course. The Cat from Huéi> has earned passionate acclaim from many of the most renowned journalists and writers about the war, as well as from military officers and war veterans, book reviewers, and readers. This book will stand with Michael Herr's Dispatches, Philip Caputo's A Rumor of War, and Neil Sheehan's A Bright, Shining Lie as one of the best books ever written about Vietnam-and about war generally.

Tropical Peatland Eco Management written by Mitsuru Osaki and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-09 with Technology & Engineering categories.

In this "Tropical Peatland Eco-management" book, eco-management is new terminology as an abbreviation of "ecology-based management for natural capital enhancement". Key concept on this eco-management is derived from previous book: "Tropical Peatland Ecosystem"(Springer, 2015, eds. by M. Osaki and N. Tsuji). Based on this new concept, this book thoroughly examines tropical peatland eco-management for scientists, political decision makers, governmental officials, land managers, students, and NGO/NPOs who are interested in 1) what the impact of peatland on climate change and ecosystem function, 2) how the management of disturbed peatland, and 3) drawing global scale restoration mechanisms of peatland and wetland. In tropical peatland, a large amount of GHGs (carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide) is emitted due to the unappropriate development and inadequate management of peatland. The peatland ecosystems consist of the carbon–water complex, which is affected easily by the impact of human and climate change. Throughout much research of tropical peatland, the problems that result from development of tropical peatland are found to stem mainly from a lack of understanding of the complexities of this ecosystem and the fragility of the relationship between peat and forest and also between carbon and water. In past, almost all peatland development and management system have been generally designed on “water drainage system”. On the contrast of old system, an innovated eco- management is, here, proposed as “water irrigation system”, including water cycling and natural capital enhancement. Through this book readers will learn the advanced peatland eco-management, with more practical methods and procedure based on ecosystem knowledge.

Reading South Vietnam S Writers written by Thomas Engelbert and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-04 with Social Science categories.

This edited book examines how South Vietnam’s (formerly the Republic of Vietnam 1955-1975) literary and journalistic writers were perceived and - potentially - influenced by Western thought, led by thinkers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Franz Kafka, Sigmund Freud, Thomas Mann, Martin Heidegger, Hermann Hesse, Edmund Husserl, Stefan Zweig, Graham Greene, and Somerset Maugham. The book reveals the dynamism and diversity of Western thought in individual literary texts, as well as among the authors themselves. The volume considers how writers and their texts engaged with issues that are socially, culturally, politically, and philosophically significant to Vietnam and beyond, past and present. This approach to South Vietnam’s literary and journalistic tradition enables an alternative plural, inclusive view of the significance of these texts, which are shown to be neither exclusively anti-Communist nor “bourgeois individualist” (cá nhân tiểu tư sản), as they have so often been interpreted both in and outside of Vietnam. Such an interpretation problematically retains the marginal position of South Vietnam’s literature in mainstream Vietnamese literature, and in the literatures of the host countries where these Vietnamese authors have migrated, settled, and continued to write following the 'Fall of Saigon'. This volume presents itself as a key text for those studying Asian and postcolonial literatures, as well as scholars in the humanities researching Vietnam – its history, politics, society, and culture.
