This edited book examines how South Vietnam’s (formerly the Republic of Vietnam 1955-1975) literary and journalistic writers were perceived and - potentially - influenced by Western thought, led by thinkers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Franz Kafka, Sigmund Freud, Thomas Mann, Martin Heidegger, Hermann Hesse, Edmund Husserl, Stefan Zweig, Graham Greene, and Somerset Maugham. The book reveals the dynamism and diversity of Western thought in individual literary texts, as well as among the authors themselves. The volume considers how writers and their texts engaged with issues that are socially, culturally, politically, and philosophically significant to Vietnam and beyond, past and present. This approach to South Vietnam’s literary and journalistic tradition enables an alternative plural, inclusive view of the significance of these texts, which are shown to be neither exclusively anti-Communist nor “bourgeois individualist” (cá nhân tiểu tư sản), as they have so often been interpreted both in and outside of Vietnam. Such an interpretation problematically retains the marginal position of South Vietnam’s literature in mainstream Vietnamese literature, and in the literatures of the host countries where these Vietnamese authors have migrated, settled, and continued to write following the 'Fall of Saigon'. This volume presents itself as a key text for those studying Asian and postcolonial literatures, as well as scholars in the humanities researching Vietnam – its history, politics, society, and culture.

This Memoir reads like an adventure novel even though it is the non-fiction real life story of a platoon leader of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam during the last few years of this complicated war. Once they start reading, it is difficult to stop, as readers have been "complaining."Being an officer of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, he had experienced and witnessed the tragic fate the South Vietnamese had to go through when the RVN had to face a well-equipped (by China and the Soviet) well-trained unstoppable enemy while fighting with no ally support and limited supplies and ammunition. The war became unbalanced after the oppressive Paris Treated (designed by Pres. Nixon's tricky team) was signed and all allies had withdrawn. Knowing what the victors would do to the South, he decided to flee to wherever that had even a shred of Freedom, in spite of Peace coming at the door. He chose to abandon his own parental family and fail his cultural duties of an eldest son, which were to stay and take care of his aging parents and innocent siblings. His journey, as a political refugee, one of the first "boat people," took him thousands miles away in the Golf of Thailand on flimsy boats. Detailed accounts of how cheap life could be for refugees as if they had seemingly no more human rights. They had become as insignificant as little minnows. Nevertheless, with perseverance, like a phoenix being reborn, he was able to soar like a phoenix being reborn, relocating from the refugee camp of Malaysia to his new home of Minnesota. He dedicated 30 years of his new life to serving the kids and community of Minneapolis, and his retirement to voicing in support for those who had risked their well-being and life to save the Democracy of his "ancestral land Vietnam" : the Vietnam Veterans. In 1955, Ngo Dinh Diem organized an election to depose chief-of-state Bao Dai, after which he proclaimed himself the first president of the newly created Republic of Vietnam. The United States sanctioned the results of this election, which was widely condemned as fraudulent, and provided substantial economic aid and advice to the RVN. Because of this, Diem is often viewed as a mere puppet of the United States, in service of its Cold War geopolitical strategy. That narrative, Jessica M. Chapman contends in Cauldron of Resistance, grossly oversimplifies the complexity of South Vietnam's domestic politics and, indeed, Diem's own political savvy. Based on extensive work in Vietnamese, French, and American archives, Chapman offers a detailed account of three crucial years, 1953-1956, during which a new Vietnamese political order was established in the south. It is, in large part, a history of Diem's political ascent as he managed to subdue the former Emperor Bao Dai, the armed Hoa Hao and Cao Dai religious organizations, and the Binh Xuyen crime organization. It is also an unparalleled account of these same outcast political powers, forces that would reemerge as destabilizing political and military actors in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Chapman shows Diem to be an engaged leader whose personalist ideology influenced his vision for the new South Vietnamese state, but also shaped the policies that would spell his demise. Washington's support for Diem because of his staunch anticommunism encouraged him to employ oppressive measures to suppress dissent, thereby contributing to the alienation of his constituency, and helped inspire the organized opposition to his government that would emerge by the late 1950s and eventually lead to the Vietnam War.
