Who are the Black heroines of Latin America and the Caribbean? Where do we turn for models of transcendence among women of African ancestry in the region? In this inventive analysis, Duke proposes three case studies and a corresponding womanist methodology through which to study and rediscover these figures. The musical Cuban-Dominican sisters and former slaves Teodora and Micaela Ginés inspired Aida Cartagena Portalatin’s epic poem Yania tierra; the Nicaraguan matriarch of the May Pole, “Miss Lizzie,” figures prominently in four anthologies from the country’s Bluefields region; and the iconic palenqueras of Cartagena, Colombia are magnified in the work of poets María Teresa Ramírez Neiva and Mirian Díaz Pérez. As migrações internacionais vêm alcançando dimensões peculiares nos atuais tempos de globalização dos mercados e de inovações nas tecnologias da informação, comunicação e transportes. Acadêmicos da temática chegam a sugerir que vivemos na era das migrações, que seriam sintetizadas em cinco características fundamentais: globalização, aceleração, diferenciação, feminização e crescente politização das migrações. As migrações internacionais atravessam um momento de grande intensidade e sem precedentes na história recente. Isso se reflete no aumento dos migrantes e refugiados ao redor do mundo, nas dissonâncias das diferentes políticas migratórias e na intensidade dos debates teóricos e metodológicos. Cada vez mais complexas, as migrações contemporâneas são difíceis de ser contabilizadas, são resistentes a marcos teóricos únicos ou disciplinares e apresentam características multifacetadas, complexas e materializadas em diferentes escalas. Nesse contexto, o Dicionário crítico de migrações internacionais apresenta conceitos derivados dos debates teóricos sobre as migrações internacionais e também de áreas afins que são apropriados pelos estudos migratórios.
