This book will finally give a face and a voice to those we so easily forget in our society. It will tell the highly personal, human and sometimes surprisingly uplifting stories of real people struggling in a crumbling system. By telling their stories, we will come to know these people; to know their hopes and fears, their complexities and their contradictions. We will learn a little more about human relationships, in all their messiness. And we’ll learn how, with just a little too much misfortune, any of us could find ourselves homeless, even become one of the hundreds of people dying on Britain’s streets. As the number of rough sleepers skyrockets across the UK, No Fixed Abode by Maeve McClenaghan will also bring to light many of the ad-hoc projects attempting to address the problem. You will meet some of the courageous people who dedicate their lives to saving the forgotten of our society and see that the smallest act of kindness or affection can save a life. This is a timely and important book encompassing wider themes of inequality and austerity measures; through the prism of homelessness, it offers a true picture of Britain today – and shows how terrifyingly close to breaking point we really are.

No Fixed Abode written by Marc Augé and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with French fiction categories.
In recent years, social workers have raised a new concern about the appearance of a new category among the working poor. Even employed, there are people so overburdened by the cost of living and so under compensated that they cannot afford a place to sleep. Contrary to popular opinion, according to the website for the Coalition for the Homeless, forty-four percent of the homeless in first world countries actually have jobs. In No Fixed Abode, Marc Augé's pathbreaking ethnofiction--a fictional ethnography--a man named Henri narrates his strange existence in the margins of Paris. By day he walks the streets, lingers in conversation with the local shopkeepers, and sits writing in cafés, but at night he takes shelter in an abandoned house. From here, we see a progressive erosion of Henri's identity, a loss of bearings, and a slow degeneration of his ability to relate to others. But then he meets the artist Dominique, whose willingness to share her life with him raises questions about who he has become and about what a person needs in order to be a part of society. This is a book about how we live in geographical space and how work and patterns of domicile affect our status and our inner being. Despite the apparent simplicity of the fictional premise, Augé's book asks serious questions about the nature of our culture.

The Value Of Homelessness written by Craig Willse and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-15 with Social Science categories.
It is all too easy to assume that social service programs respond to homelessness, seeking to prevent and understand it. The Value of Homelessness, however, argues that homelessness today is an effect of social services and sciences, which shape not only what counts as such but what will?or ultimately won’t?be done about it. Through a history of U.S. housing insecurity from the 1930s to the present, Craig Willse traces the emergence and consolidation of a homeless services industry. How to most efficiently allocate resources to control ongoing insecurity has become the goal, he shows, rather than how to eradicate the social, economic, and political bases of housing needs. Drawing on his own years of work in homeless advocacy and activist settings, as well as interviews conducted with program managers, counselors, and staff at homeless services organizations in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle, Willse provides the first analysis of how housing insecurity becomes organized as a governable social problem. An unprecedented and powerful historical account of the development of contemporary ideas about homelessness and how to manage homelessness, The Value of Homelessness offers new ways for students and scholars of social work, urban inequality, racial capitalism, and political theory to comprehend the central role of homelessness in governance and economy today.

Woodbridge shows that the prevailing image of the vagrant poor in Renaissance England--sturdy, comical, resourceful rogues who were adept at living on the fringes of society--was essentially a literary fabrication pressed into the service of specific social and political agendas.

Four Feet Under written by Tamsen Courtenay and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Homeless persons categories.
'Touching, insightful and human - this book demands a social and, above all, a political response' Jon Snow Tamsen Courtenay spent two months speaking to people who live on London's streets, the homeless and the destitute - people who feel they are invisible. With a camera and a cheap audio recorder, Tamsen listened as they chronicled their extraordinary lives, now being lived four feet below most Londoners, and she set about documenting their stories, which are transcribed here along with intimate photographic portraits. A builder, a soldier, a transgender woman, a child prostitute and an elderly couple are among those who describe the events that led to the life they live now. They speak of childhoods, careers and relationships; their strengths and weaknesses, dreams and regrets; all with humour and a startling honesty. Tamsen's adventures and observations are threaded throughout. She was beaten with a piece of wood by a drunk man in a suit, learned what crack cocaine smells like and got a lung infection. But the people she met changed her forever and they became her heroes, people she grew to respect. You don't have to go far to find these homegrown exiles: they're at the bottom of your road. Have you ever wondered how they got there?

Young Homeless People takes a broad approach to the distressing phenomenon of youth homelessness. While politicians, researchers and the media focus on the more visibly homeless - those sleeping rough in city centres or staying in hostels - this book also considers the young homeless hidden in local communities. It places young people's experiences of homelessness in the context of their biographies as a whole and makes policy and practice recommendations based on the views and preferences of young homeless people themselves.

No System written by Vinca Petersen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Alternative lifestyles categories.
No System is Vinca Petersen's photographic document of her life as a modern nomad. She tells us in her introduction, "Different people's lives are based around different things, ours is based around music. "For the last few years she has been traveling with a group of young people through Europe, organizing illegal musical events and raves. Living between cities in old vans and buses, they scavenge for abandoned structures, often on the cusp between urban and rural areas, where they can dance to loud techno music. The photographs present a fascinating look at modern tribal life, where technology-driven equipment and music, discarded industrial frameworks, and a nomadic lifestyle, rooted in ancient history, all come together.
