Dismantling the myths of United States isolationism and exceptionalism, No Higher Law is a sweeping history and analysis of American policy toward the Western Hemisphere and Latin America from independence to the present. From the nation's earliest days, argues Brian Loveman, U.S. leaders viewed and treated Latin America as a crucible in which to test foreign policy and from which to expand American global influence. Loveman demonstrates how the main doctrines and policies adopted for the Western Hemisphere were exported, with modifications, to other world regions as the United States pursued its self-defined global mission. No Higher Law reveals the interplay of domestic politics and international circumstances that shaped key American foreign policies from U.S. independence to the first decade of the twenty-first century. This revisionist view considers the impact of slavery, racism, ethnic cleansing against Native Americans, debates on immigration, trade and tariffs, the historical growth of the military-industrial complex, and political corruption as critical dimensions of American politics and foreign policy. Concluding with an epilogue on the Obama administration, Loveman weaves together the complex history of U.S. domestic politics and foreign policy to achieve a broader historical understanding of American expansionism, militarism, imperialism, and global ambitions as well as novel insights into the challenges facing American policymakers at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

As a rule, prosecutor Ben Kaplan, chief of the Major Crimes unit in the US Attorney's office in New York, has a clear idea of where his loyalties lie. But when a small-time fraud in his jurisdiction escalates into a front-page sensation, his life isn't so easy. The case opens as a credit-card scam by a group of orthodox Jews, but when a hard-ass agent embarks on a late-night raid, shots are fired and a Jewish vigilante ends up in a coma. Soon there are threatening demonstrations taking place on the streets of Brooklyn. This blaze of racial violence comes at a time when he is trying to reconnect with his own roots and provide a proper Jewish home for his five-year-old daughter, Hannah. Though he's not yet over his wife's death in a car crash three years earlier, he is falling under the spell of Judith Zilka, a student in a law school class he teaches, and her circle of friends, in particular the charismatic rabbi Joshua Brauner. Ben is captivated - until he realises that Joshua may be connected to the suspects in the counterfeiting case...as well as crimes with far more threatening consequences.

The Higher Law Background Of American Constitutional Law written by Edward Samuel Corwin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1961 with Law categories.

Having written extensively on various aspects of the American constitutional order, Edward S Corwin is considered a leading constitutional scholar of the twentieth century. Alpheus Mason described Corwin's writings as 'sources of learning and understanding - hallmarks to emulate and revere'. "The Higher Law Background of American Constitutional Law" is of unique value in connecting the Western European experience - from the classical world, the Middle Ages, and the seventeenth-century thought of Coke and Locke - to the American founding. This renowned work provides a bold and accurate outline of the tradition behind the 'higher law' of the United States and places in historical context the political philosophy underlying the US Declaration of Independence and Constitution. This volume addresses questions such as: where did the idea of a 'higher law' originate? how has it been able to survive and in what transformations? what special forms of it are of particular interest for historians and political theorists? and; how was it brought to America and wrought into the American system of government? As Clinton Rossiter notes in his prefatory note, 'No one can come away from reading ("Higher Law") without realizing how much we in America are part of Western civilization. The men we meet in the pages of this essay - Demosthenes, Sophocles, Aristotle, Cicero, Seneca, Ulpian, Gaius, John of Salisbury, Isidore of Seville, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bracton, Fortescue, Coke, Grotius, Newton, Hooker, Pufendorf, Locke, Blackstone - all insisted that the laws by which men live can and should be the 'embodiment of essential and unchanging justice', and we may salute them respectfully as founding fathers of our experiment in ordered liberty'. In this volume Corwin demonstrates how the concept of a higher law developed and was understood by the leading thinkers of the American Revolutionary period as well as how the ideal of the higher law impacted the creation of the American Constitution. Students, scholars, and general interested readers of constitutional law and political theory will find inspiration in the pages of "The Higher Law Background of American Constitutional Law".

"See 1st ed. (#323560) This second edition is designed to further the quest to look beyond legal rules and institutions to the legal philosophies that shaped them. Its overall purpose and most of the readings remain unchanged, but some readings have been updated to reflect recent developments in the law, including critical race theory and jury reforms. This new edition also addresses current issues regarding international and constitutional law, considering the moral and legal arguments regarding preemptive war and whether transgendered individuals have a fundamental human right to change their sexual identity on their birth certificate. This broader focus recognizes that many clashes over legal worldview are taking place outside the realm of the common law."--Publisher's website.
