"The motivation for this piece was two broken pieces of slate that were a gift from a collaborator, Bill Waldman. He had salvaged them from the roof of a fire station awaiting demolition in rural Maryland and had drilled holes in them thinking I could use them to bind a book. The drilled holes were set too far in from the edge to make for easy binding, so I put them aside for half a year. Then one morning I took them out of their box and started cleaning them up with a soft cloth. I saw that the edges were embedded with dark dust so I dragged one edge across a piece of newspaper. To my surprise, the slate left a track of beautiful parallel lines. I reached for a sketchbook and made a series of gestural drawings until all the slate dust had rubbed off. I chose a French door structure to bind the drawings so that I could juxtapose an image on the left side against a series of images on the right side, and vice versa. With this design, the slate pieces could still serve as book covers without having to provide structural support to the binding. As I arranged the drawings from darker to lighter markings, I felt like keeping the last double page white. That was just my own sense of narrative -- the slate writes no more. While preparing the drawings for binding, a working title came to mind: "Blank Slate." Over time the title changed to "Slate Speaks Only When Broken," a literal truth in this case but also a metaphor for creative expression that provokes emotion (or emotion that provokes creative expression). The loss of the ability to make marks felt deeply poignant to me, and if my work makes me laugh or makes me cry then I know that it is true" --
