It wouldn’t be a holiday in Bull Creek without something going wrong, and this Halloween is no different. Shifters are disappearing, and when one of the bodies is discovered with fang marks in its neck, Josh Rayburn believes the vampires are involved and the peace between the factions broken. Of course, he struggles to explain the massive monster carrying the body. Karena Hahn, leader of the vampire coven on the Fringe of Bull Creek, has kept her secret for decades, but now it might be time to reveal her true nature as corpses of the shifter community start popping up. But is Bull Creek ready to know about the Agamidae? And what of the monster tracking her? A war between the factions threatens to break out unless Dimitri Everest, Alpha of Bull Creek, can stop it and prove it’s not the vampires killing shifters. The emergence of the Mormon church is arguably the most radical event in American religious history. How and why did so many Americans flock to this new religion, and why did so many other Americans seek to silence or even destroy that movement? Winner of the MHA Best Book Award by the Mormon History Association Mormonism exploded across America in 1830, and America exploded right back. By 1834, the new religion had been mocked, harassed, and finally expelled from its new settlements in Missouri. Why did this religion generate such anger? And what do these early conflicts say about our struggles with religious liberty today? In No Place for Saints, the first stand-alone history of the Mormon expulsion from Jackson County and the genesis of Mormonism, Adam Jortner chronicles how Latter-day Saints emerged and spread their faith—and how anti-Mormons tried to stop them. Early on, Jortner explains, anti-Mormonism thrived on gossip, conspiracies, and outright fables about what Mormons were up to. Anti-Mormons came to believe Mormons were a threat to democracy, and anyone who claimed revelation from God was an enemy of the people with no rights to citizenship. By 1833, Jackson County's anti-Mormons demanded all Saints leave the county. When Mormons refused—citing the First Amendment—the anti-Mormons attacked their homes, held their leaders at gunpoint, and performed one of America's most egregious acts of religious cleansing. From the beginnings of Mormonism in the 1820s to their expansion and expulsion in 1834, Jortner discusses many of the most prominent issues and events in Mormon history. He touches on the process of revelation, the relationship between magic and LDS practice, the rise of the priesthood, the questions surrounding Mormonism and African Americans, the internal struggles for leadership of the young church, and how American law shaped this American religion. Throughout, No Place for Saints shows how Mormonism—and the violent backlash against it—fundamentally reshaped the American religious and legal landscape. Ultimately, the book is a story of Jacksonian America, of how democracy can fail religious freedom, and a case study in popular politics as America entered a great age of religion and violence.

No Place To Go written by Lezlie Lowe and has been published by Melville House UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-07 with Social Science categories.

Gender inequality. Ableism. Transphobia. One aspect of our daily lives highlights discrimination and inequality with shocking clarity: toilet access. In No Place to Go, Lezlie Lowe explores the political and exclusionary issues which are ignored by our politicians and city planners and tolerated by a suffering public. Endless queues for the women's toilet are more serious than a long-running joke; it means the built environment is designed with men in mind. We don't embrace widespread gender neutrality in public toilets; to do so would entail bigger discussions about gender. We don't want to consider the consequences of being caught short if you are homeless or have a disability; that would involve engaging in political and social conversations, with potential economic ramifications. Lowe tells us it is time we start having these discussions and recognize these problems because when the needs of women and children, the homeless, the disabled and the ill are not met, society suffers.

The discovery of a family cookbook changes the life of a beleaguered woman in this novel by the author of The Language of Sisters. Two years ago, Olivia Martindale left behind her Montana hometown and her husband, Jace, certain it was the best decision for both of them. Back temporarily to protect her almost-adopted daughters from their biological mother, she discovers an old, handwritten cookbook in the attic. Its pages are stained and torn, their edges scorched by flame. Some have been smeared by water . . . or tears. The recipes are written in different hands and in different languages. In between the pages are intriguing mementos, including a feather, a pressed rose, a charm, and unfamiliar photographs. Hoping the recipes will offer a window into her grandmother’s closely guarded past, Olivia decides to make each dish, along with their favorite family cake recipes, and records her attempts. The result, like much of her life to date, involves a parade of near-disasters and chaotic appearances by her doctor mother, her blunt grandma, her short-tempered sister, and Olivia’s two hilarious daughters. The project is messy, real—and an unintended hit with viewers. Even more surprising is the family history Olivia is uncovering, and her own reemerging ties to Montana, and to Jace. Generations of women have shared these recipes, offering strength and nourishment to each other and their loved ones. Now it’s Olivia’s turn to find healing—and determine where her home and her heart truly belong. Praise for Cathy Lamb “This finely pitched family melodrama is balanced with enough gallows humor and idiosyncratic characters to make it positively irresistible.” —Publishers Weekly on Henry’s Sisters
