Jahrhunderts nahmen hunderttausende Juden in den österreichischen Provinzen Galizien und Bukowina neu geschaffene deutsche Familiennamen an. Johannes Czakai legt nun die erste umfassende wissenschaftliche Studie vor zu diesem bis heute prägenden Kapitel jüdischer Geschichte, über das bislang nur Anekdoten bekannt waren. Aufbauend auf zuvor unbekanntem Archivmaterial folgt der Autor dem Leben und den wechselnden Namen des jüdischen Kleinhändlers Nochem aus Lemberg und zeigt, wie die neuen Namen dazu beitrugen, die jüdische Lebenswelt in Ostmitteleuropa nachhaltig zu transformieren. Die Namensannahme stellt sich als widersprüchlicher Prozess dar, der vor allem der Ausbildung staatlicher Kontrollmechanismen diente. Juden waren jedoch keineswegs nur passive Empfänger dieser Politik, sondern verstanden es, die Zwangsmaßnahme für sich zu nutzen. Johannes Czakai ergründet die nicht nur teils verblüffende Geschichte hinter den neu kreierten Namen, sondern eröffnet zudem einen originellen Blick auf jüdisch-staatliche Interaktionen in der sich modernisierenden Habsburgermonarchie. In the aftermath of the Shoah and the ostensible triumph of nationalism, it became common in historiography to relegate Jews to the position of the “eternal other” in a series of binaries: Christian/Jewish, Gentile/Jewish, European/Jewish, non-Jewish/Jewish, and so forth. For the longest time, these binaries remained characteristic of Jewish historiography, including in the Central European context. Assuming instead, as the more recent approaches in Habsburg studies do, that pluriculturalism was the basis of common experience in formerly Habsburg Central Europe, and accepting that no single “majority culture” existed, but rather hegemonies were imposed in certain contexts, then the often used binaries are misleading and conceal the complex and sometimes even paradoxical conditions that shaped Jewish life in the region before the Shoah. The very complexity of Habsburg Central Europe both in synchronic and diachronic perspective precludes any singular historical narrative of “Habsburg Jewry,” and it is not the intention of this volume to offer an overview of “Habsburg Jewish history.” The selected articles in this volume illustrate instead how important it is to reevaluate categories, deconstruct historical narratives, and reconceptualize implemented approaches in specific geographic, temporal, and cultural contexts in order to gain a better understanding of the complex and pluricultural history of the Habsburg Empire and the region as a whole.

The twentieth-century artist Bruno Schulz was born an Austrian, lived as a Pole, and died a Jew. Anhand von Taufen, Hochzeiten und Bestattungen verzeichneten sie nicht nur wichtige kirchliche Rituale, sondern legten auch die ersten umfassenden Personenstandsverzeichnisse an: Kirchenbücher. Eva Marie Lehner untersucht damit erstmals die Anfänge der Kirchenbuchführung im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert. Dabei geht sie den möglichen Gründen nach, warum das kirchliche Personal systematisch mit der Dokumentation personenbezogener Daten begann. Zudem zeigt sie auf, welche Kategorien (Geschlecht, Stand, Religion, Ehelichkeit, Körper, Seelenheil usw.) wie aufeinander bezogen wurden, um Personen zu identifizieren. Das "Hungerleiderhaus" und sein Besitzer Simon Hungerleider, ein erfolgreicher jüdischer Geflügelhändler, stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Geschichte, die im Osten der k.u.k. Monarchie ihren Anfang nahm, in Wien ihre Blütezeit erlebte und im Exil und den NS-Todeslagern ihr tragisches Ende fand. Das "Hungerleiderhaus" war ab März 1938 Schauplatz der Judenverfolgung mit allen Facetten des Nazi-Terrors. Sein Besitzer Simon Hungerleider hatte bis dahin ein bewegtes Leben geführt: Er arbeitete als Zigarrenverkäufer in einem Bordell in Amerika, war viermal verheiratet, dreimal geschieden und hatte einen unehelichen Sohn, er erlebte Verhaftungen und Freisprüche. Aber 1938 war Simons Welt eine andere: Er spielte mit den NS-Behörden Katz und Maus, trieb den Abwickler seiner Firma zur Verzweiflung, schloss einen notariellen Erbvertrag mit seiner "arischen" Frau, schenkte ihr das Hungerleiderhaus und inszenierte eine Schein-Scheidung. Nicht abwenden konnte er die Ermordung seines achtjährigen Enkels Herbert in Maly Trostinec. Simon Hungerleider starb Ende 1942 in Theresienstadt.

But as Kirsten Fermaglich elegantly reveals, the real story is much more profound. Scratching below the surface, Fermaglich examines previously unexplored name change petitions to upend the clichés, revealing that in twentieth-century New York City, Jewish name changing was actually a broad-based and voluntary behavior: thousands of ordinary Jewish men, women, and children legally changed their names in order to respond to an upsurge of antisemitism. Rather than trying to escape their heritage or “pass” as non-Jewish, most name-changers remained active members of the Jewish community. While name changing allowed Jewish families to avoid antisemitism and achieve white middle-class status, the practice also created pain within families and became a stigmatized, forgotten aspect of American Jewish culture. This first history of name changing in the United States offers a previously unexplored window into American Jewish life throughout the twentieth century.
