Excerpt from Noctes Ambrosianae, Vol. 1 May, 1854, had fairly set in ere I could commence writing the notes, and the five volumes being distributed among as many printers, as the pressure for time was unusually great, I had to supply fresh copy daily to each, and to correct five separate sets of proofs and revises, and to annotate every passage where it seemed necessary. At the same time, I was also literary editor and political writer on a daily, and dramatic and musical critic on a weekly paper in New York. Nor was my labor limited to mere annotations - for I had to preface the volumes with an elaborate history of Blackwood's Magazine, and biographies of Wil son, Lockhart, Hogg, and Maginn. Lastly (and this alone took a fortnight), I had to make a double index, containing over three thousand references. The time occupied on the work was three months, during which I averaged fourteen hours work per day - taking a recess only on each Sunday. The greatest pains, however, have been taken to repair the effects of this procrastination, in so far as they are remediable, and to send forth the N octes Ambrosianae to the world in the form deemed most in accordance with the mind Of their Author, and best calculated to suit the taste of the public. The original series has been carefully revised and sifted. All the contributions to it (songs and quotations being, of course, excepted), which were not written by the Professor, have been excluded from republication, and seve ral of the Dialogues which were his only in part, have been omitted. By means Of these retrenchments, it is believed 'th at the Text Of the work has been settled as correctly and as conclusively as it was possible for it to be in the circum stances. Nineteenth-century periodicals frequently compared themselves to the imperial powers then dissecting the globe, and this interest in imperialism can be seen in the exotic motifs that surfaced in works by such late Romantic authors as John Keats, Charles Lamb, James Hogg, Letitia Landon, and Lord Byron. Karen Fang explores the collaboration of these authors with periodical magazines to show how an interdependent relationship between these visual themes and rhetorical style enabled these authors to model their writing on the imperial project. Fang argues that in the decades after Waterloo late Romantic authors used imperial culture to capitalize on the contemporary explosion of periodical magazines. This proliferation of "post-Napoleonic" writing—often referencing exotic locales—both revises longstanding notions about literary orientalism and reveals a remarkable synthesis of Romantic idealism with contemporary cultural materialism that heretofore has not been explored. Indeed, in interlocking case studies that span the reach of British conquest, ranging from Greece, China, and Egypt to Italy and Tahiti, Fang challenges a major convention of periodical publication. While periodicals are usually thought to be defined by time, this account of the geographic attention exerted by late Romantic authors shows them to be equally concerned with space. With its exploration of magazines and imperialism as a context for Romantic writing, culture, and aesthetics, this book will appeal not only to scholars of book history and reading cultures but also to those of nineteenth-century British writing and history.
