Contrairement à une idée reçue, le blanc est une couleur à part entière, au même titre que le rouge, le bleu, le vert ou le jaune. Le livre de Michel Pastoureau retrace sa longue histoire en Europe, de l'Antiquité la plus reculée jusqu'aux sociétés contemporaines. Il s'intéresse à tous ses aspects, du lexique aux symboles, en passant par la culture matérielle, les pratiques sociales, les savoirs scientifiques, les morales religieuses, la création artistique. Avant le XVIIe siècle, jamais le blanc ne s'est vu contester son statut de véritable couleur. Bien au contraire, de l'Antiquité jusqu'au cœur du Moyen Âge, il a constitué avec le rouge et le noir une triade chromatique jouant un rôle de premier plan dans la vie quotidienne et dans le monde des représentations. De même, pendant des siècles, il n'y a jamais eu, dans quelque langue que ce soit, synonymie entre « blanc » et « incolore » : jamais blanc n'a signifié « sans couleur ». Et même, les langues européennes ont longtemps usé de plusieurs mots pour exprimer les différentes nuances du blanc. Celui-ci n'a du reste pas toujours été pensé comme un contraire du noir : dans l'Antiquité classique et tout au long du Moyen Âge, le vrai contraire du blanc était le rouge. D'où la très grande richesse symbolique du blanc, bien plus positive que négative : pureté, virginité, innocence, sagesse, paix, beauté, propreté. Accompagné d'une abondante iconographie, cet ouvrage est le sixième d'une série consacrée à l'histoire sociale et culturelle des couleurs en Europe.

This study investigates the capacity of Shakespeare’s texts – obviously destined for stage performances – to generate images and mental colours in the readers’ and in the spectators’ minds. Such notions as Ut pictura poesis and the paragoneare discussed in the first part of this book, along with the function and nature of colours. After considering the sets of correspondences and the major differences between texts and images, the author presents and analyzes some of his own illustrations of Shakespearean characters. Jean-Louis Claret, both a university professor specialized in Shakespeare’s theatre and an illustrator, proposes to shed light on the process that led him from the perusal of the written text to the visualization of visages. The voice of poets is unconventionally called upon to shed light on the complex mechanisms he describes.
