True to Goldoni's mixture of comic wit and farce, the plot is a breathtakingly fast succession of twists and turns which only unravel in the very final lines with a surprise ending. Two friends are in love with the same young woman. Neither wants to place their friendship in jeopardy. How can love triumph without breaking off their friendship? Goldoni explores the conflicts brought about when Florindo has to choose between Lelio, his best friend, and Rosaura, his best friend's fiancée. Added to this conundrum are the issues of whether Ottavio, the old miser, will provide a dowry and the mature Beatrice's unashamed incessant pursuit of Florindo. The play is set in Bologna in Lelio's house. Florindo is a guest along with his faithful manservant. From the opening of the play, Florindo seeks to return home to Venice in order not to damage his friend's relationship. However, his departure is obstructed time and again by his hosts, leading to one complication after another. From the beginning, the plot is intense and fast-moving with inversions fed into the action in quick succession. This creates suspense which continues throughout the play as potential marriage partners are switched back and forth until the very ending when the audience finally discovers what the main characters' destiny will be. Will love or friendship prevail? The Venetian element is brought into this play through Florindo and his manservant, both Venetians. Apart from these two characters, all the others are portrayed as self-seeking, selfish and sly - whether servants or masters. The tension is kept at a constantly high level by the struggles between the characters. These struggles are not just brought about through love and friendship but are also generational and social. Furthermore, there is the added complication in the contrast of the characters' ideas of reality as they deceive one another. This creates dramatic irony and humour as the audience know more than any of the characters on stage. In Memoirs (Carlo Goldoni's autobiography), Goldoni states: "This play [Il vero amico] is one of my favourites and I have had the greatest pleasure in seeing that the audience is of my opinion". In The Sword and the Pen: Women, Politics, and Poetry in Sixteenth-Century Siena, Konrad Eisenbichler analyzes the work of Sienese women poets, in particular, Aurelia Petrucci, Laudomia Forteguerri, and Virginia Salvi, during the first half of the sixteenth century up to the fall of Siena in 1555. Eisenbichler sets forth a complex and original interpretation of the experiences of these three educated noblewomen and their contributions to contemporary culture in Siena by looking at the emergence of a new lyric tradition and the sonnets they exchanged among themselves and with their male contemporaries. Through the analysis of their poems and various book dedications to them, Eisenbichler reveals the intersection of poetry, politics, and sexuality, as well as the gendered dialogue that characterized Siena's literary environment during the late Renaissance. Eisenbichler also examines other little-known women poets and their relationship to the cultural environment of Siena, underlining the exceptional role of the city of Siena as the most important center of women's writing in the first half of the sixteenth century in Italy, and probably in all of Europe. This innovative contribution to the field of late Renaissance and early modern Italian and women's studies rescues from near oblivion a group of literate women who were celebrated by contemporary scholars but who have been largely ignored today, both because of a dearth of biographical information about them and because of a narrow evaluation of their poetry. The short story writers featured in this brief anthology – all established figures on the Italian literary scene – have been specifically chosen as being representative of the various geographical regions in the Italian peninsula, ranging from Ginzburg, Pavese and Soldati (Piedmont), Colombi Guidotti and Guareschi (Emilia Romagna region), Tozzi (Tuscany), D’Annunzio (Abruzzi region) and Moravia (Lazio region) to Pirandello and Verga (Sicily) and Deledda (Sardinia). Twelve of these literary masters’ very best novelle – richly diverse both thematically and stylistically – can be read in the original, unabridged Italian with parallel English translations, accompanied by a brief account of the life and literary achievements of each writer, as well as a few notes on the context in which the narrative was written and some relevant features of theme and content. The novelle themselves, originally published in Italy between 1880 (marking the publication of Verga’s La lupa) and 1971 (the year of the publication of Soldati’s Una donna comprensiva), span almost a whole century. Although presented in chronological order of publication – being self-contained racconti – they can be read in any order. All of them lend themselves to the leitmotif of the collection: that of a woman as the central character (D’Annunzio’s Candia, the Princess in Deledda’s fairy-tale, Pirandello’s Mommina, gnà Pina in Verga’s story, etc.). Two of the writers, Grazia Deledda and Natalia Ginzburg, are themselves women writing about women. The anthology, on the one hand, offers readers the opportunity to savour a few delights of Italian literature and culture, and, on the other, promotes effective language learning through a wide spectrum of language and styles. While remaining faithful to the originals, the translations lay emphasis on readability and fluency, thus making their perusal a pleasurable experience in itself. In addition, the stories in this collection will certainly stimulate further interest in Italian literature.

Non è vero che in un individuo l’equilibrio si raggiunge con l’equilibrio tra la parte maschile e la parte femminile né si sa cosa tali “parti” siano davvero. Non è vero che l’anima è un archetipo che può “far crescere” un maschio soltanto se proiettato su una donna, farlo procedere dallo stato beluino a quello di “vero uomo” o, più falso ancora, da bambino ad adulto. Semmai sono le donne a essere le eterne bambine. Non è vero che un uomo possa avere pace soltanto armonizzando in unità di tutte le componenti della psiche. Al contrario, può raggiungere se non quiete almeno dignità e rispetto per se stesso soltanto imparando a navigare tra le sue contraddizioni, nel suo caos. Un altro luogo comune da sfatare? La teoria della santificante conciliazione degli opposti. Conduce a scelte devastanti per la società e assassine per l’individuo, è la culla di ogni bastardo compromesso politico, è il frutto avvelenato del pensiero di Hegel e dell’eterno oscillare tra assolutismo assassino e lassismo scatenato proprio della sua patria tedesca. Ultima chicca: nel rapporto con i sentimenti è la donna a essere handicappata, schiava com’è delle emozioni che sono causa prima dei sentimenti stessi ma in grado, se non filtrate alchenicamente, di soffocarli sul nascere, di portare ogni individuo – donna o uomo che sia – alle scelte più sbagliate della propria vita. Erich Weisz esamina tutti questi “miti” dell’età moderna, “miti” nel senso etimologico di indiscutibili verità. Sono verità assolute come in passato lo sono state quelle che affermavano essere i negri non umani, la terra piatta, le donne inferiori quando non streghe, unico dio il dio dominante della cultura militarmente superiore. Ipotesi da cui Erich Weisz deduce essere ogni guerra una guerra tra dèi combattuta con la carne e il sangue degli umani. Tra tanti luoghi comuni incrollabili, pietrificati opinioni Erich Weisz naviga per fare aprire gli occhi del lettore sul fatto che tante devastanti menzogne sono volte a riportare al potere assoluto nella cultura occidentale una divinità arcaica ostile al maschio della specie e al progredire della specie umana. Per lui tale divinità nemica è la Grande Madre. Weisz espone il proprio eterodosso pensiero attraverso un saggio romanzato in cui compaiono dèi, oltre a uomini e donne. Gli dèi intervengono nelle loro umane vicende come facevano in remoti poemi epici o come sono sentiti vivi e presenti e vengono invocati ogni giorno in famiglie religiose d’ogni credo. Gli dèi di questa saga non sono come i pupazzi di un cartone animato o le figure costruite al computer in storie contemporanee di grande successo, in film e romanzi. Non sono mere immagini commoventi. Non offrono effetti visivi speciali in 3D, roba da videogiochi. Sono dèi veri ed eterni. Sono dèi difficili da “sentire” ma turbano quando toccano l’animo. Il loro costellarsi grazie alle righe di queste libro possono disturbare molti, come disturbano le verità più profonde, le verità che si agitano nel profondo dell’inconscio. Se inascoltate, possono persino sconvolgere, irritare, fare arrabbiare. Si sconsiglia pertanto la lettura de La Divinità Nemica a conformisti e iracondi, qualunque sia la loro età e il modo di esprimere la propria sessualità.

La penna di Gianfrancesco Intini, capace di alternare descrizioni minuziose a riflessioni di natura esistenziale e scene d’azione, genera un giallo oscuro dove si vince solo se si è capaci di scegliere, di seguire il proprio istinto, di andare oltre la razionalità.
