Since its inception by Perron and Frobenius, the theory of non-negative matrices has developed enormously and is now being used and extended in applied fields of study as diverse as probability theory, numerical analysis, demography, mathematical economics, and dynamic programming, while its development is still proceeding rapidly as a branch of pure mathematics in its own right. While there are books which cover this or that aspect of the theory, it is nevertheless not uncommon for workers in one or another branch of its development to be unaware of what is known in other branches, even though there is often formal overlap. One of the purposes of this book is to relate several aspects of the theory, insofar as this is possible. The author hopes that the book will be useful to mathematicians; but in particular to the workers in applied fields, so the mathematics has been kept as simple as could be managed. The mathematical requisites for reading it are: some knowledge of real-variable theory, and matrix theory; and a little knowledge of complex-variable; the emphasis is on real-variable methods. (There is only one part of the book, the second part of 55.5, which is of rather specialist interest, and requires deeper knowledge.) Appendices provide brief expositions of those areas of mathematics needed which may be less g- erally known to the average reader.

Here is a valuable text and research tool for scientists and engineers who use or work with theory and computation associated with practical problems relating to Markov chains and queuing networks, economic analysis, or mathematical programming. Originally published in 1979, this new edition adds material that updates the subject relative to developments from 1979 to 1993. Theory and applications of nonnegative matrices are blended here, and extensive references are included in each area. You will be led from the theory of positive operators via the Perron-Frobenius theory of nonnegative matrices and the theory of inverse positivity, to the widely used topic of M-matrices. On the way, semigroups of nonnegative matrices and symmetric nonnegative matrices are discussed. Later, applications of nonnegativity and M-matrices are given; for numerical analysis the example is convergence theory of iterative methods, for probability and statistics the examples are finite Markov chains and queuing network models, for mathematical economics the example is input-output models, and for mathematical programming the example is the linear complementarity problem. Nonnegativity constraints arise very naturally throughout the physical world. Engineers, applied mathematicians, and scientists who encounter nonnegativity or generalizations of nonegativity in their work will benefit from topics covered here, connecting them to relevant theory. Researchers in one area, such as queuing theory, may find useful the techniques involving nonnegative matrices used by researchers in another area, say, mathematical programming. Exercises and biographical notes are included with each chapter.

Nonnegative Matrices in the Mathematical Sciences provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the theory of nonnegative matrices. This book describes selected applications of the theory to numerical analysis, probability, economics, and operations research. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the properties of nonnegative matrices. This text then examines the inverse-positive matrices. Other chapters consider the basic approaches to the study of nonnegative matrices, namely, geometrical and combinatorial. This book discusses as well some useful ideas from the algebraic theory of semigroups and considers a canonical form for nonnegative idempotent matrices and special types of idempotent matrices. The final chapter deals with the linear complementary problem (LCP). This book is a valuable resource for mathematical economists, mathematical programmers, statisticians, mathematicians, and computer scientists.

This book provides an integrated treatment of the theory of nonnegative matrices (matrices with only positive numbers or zero as entries) and some related classes of positive matrices, concentrating on connections with game theory, combinatorics, inequalities, optimisation and mathematical economics. The wide variety of applications, which include price fixing, scheduling and the fair division problem, have been carefully chosen both for their elegant mathematical content and for their accessibility to students with minimal preparation. Many results in matrix theory are also presented. The treatment is rigorous and almost all results are proved completely. These results and applications will be of great interest to researchers in linear programming, statistics and operations research. The minimal prerequisites also make the book accessible to first-year graduate students.

Nonnegative matrices is an increasingly important subject in economics, control theory, numerical analysis, Markov chains, and other areas. This concise treatment is directed toward undergraduates who lack specialized knowledge at the postgraduate level of mathematics and related fields, such as mathematical economics and operations research. An Introductory Survey encompasses some aspects of matrix theory and its applications and other relevant topics in linear algebra, including certain facets of graph theory. Subsequent chapters cover various points of the theory of normal matrices, comprising unitary and Hermitian matrices, and the properties of positive definite matrices. An exploration of the main topic, nonnegative matrices, is followed by a discussion of M-matrices. The final chapter examines stochastic, genetic, and economic models. The important concepts are illustrated by simple worked examples. Problems appear at the conclusion of most chapters, with solutions at the end of the book.

Stability theory has allowed us to study both qualitative and quantitative properties of dynamical systems, and control theory has played a key role in designing numerous systems. Contemporary sensing and communication n- works enable collection and subscription of geographically-distributed inf- mation and such information can be used to enhance signi?cantly the perf- manceofmanyofexisting systems. Throughasharedsensing/communication network, heterogeneoussystemscannowbecontrolledtooperaterobustlyand autonomously; cooperative control is to make the systems act as one group and exhibit certain cooperative behavior, and it must be pliable to physical and environmental constraints as well as be robust to intermittency, latency and changing patterns of the information ?ow in the network. This book attempts to provide a detailed coverage on the tools of and the results on analyzing and synthesizing cooperative systems. Dynamical systems under consideration can be either continuous-time or discrete-time, either linear or non-linear, and either unconstrained or constrained. Technical contents of the book are divided into three parts. The ?rst part consists of Chapters 1, 2, and 4. Chapter 1 provides an overview of coope- tive behaviors, kinematical and dynamical modeling approaches, and typical vehicle models. Chapter 2 contains a review of standard analysis and design tools in both linear control theory and non-linear control theory. Chapter 4 is a focused treatment of non-negativematrices and their properties,multipli- tive sequence convergence of non-negative and row-stochastic matrices, and the presence of these matrices and sequences in linear cooperative systems.

This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fme subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
