The purpose of this monograph is to provide a systematic account of the theory of noncommutative integration in semi-finite von Neumann algebras. It is designed to serve as an introductory graduate level text as well as a basic reference for more established mathematicians with interests in the continually expanding areas of noncommutative analysis and probability. Its origins lie in two apparently distinct areas of mathematical analysis: the theory of operator ideals going back to von Neumann and Schatten and the general theory of rearrangement invariant Banach lattices of measurable functions which has its roots in many areas of classical analysis related to the well-known Lp-spaces. A principal aim, therefore, is to present a general theory which contains each of these motivating areas as special cases.

This concise monograph explores how core ideas in Hardy space function theory and operator theory continue to be useful and informative in new settings, leading to new insights for noncommutative multivariable operator theory. Beginning with a review of the confluence of system theory ideas and reproducing kernel techniques, the book then covers representations of backward-shift-invariant subspaces in the Hardy space as ranges of observability operators, and representations for forward-shift-invariant subspaces via a Beurling–Lax representer equal to the transfer function of the linear system. This pair of backward-shift-invariant and forward-shift-invariant subspace form a generalized orthogonal decomposition of the ambient Hardy space. All this leads to the de Branges–Rovnyak model theory and characteristic operator function for a Hilbert space contraction operator. The chapters that follow generalize the system theory and reproducing kernel techniques to enable an extension of the ideas above to weighted Bergman space multivariable settings.

Derivations on von Neumann algebras are well understood and are always inner, meaning that they act as commutators with a fixed element from the algebra itself. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete description of derivations on algebras of operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra. The book is designed to serve as an introductory graduate level to various measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebras and their properties. These classes of operators form their respective algebras and the problem of describing derivations on these algebras was raised by Ayupov, and later by Kadison and Liu. A principal aim of the book is to fully resolve the Ayupov-Kadison-Liu problem by proving a necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of non-inner derivation of algebras of measurable operators. It turns out that only for a finite type I von Neumann algebra M may there exist a non-inner derivation on the algebra of operators affiliated with M. In particular, it is established that the classical derivation d/dt of functions of real variables can be extended up to a derivation on the algebra of all measurable functions. This resolves a long-standing problem in classical analysis.

The intention of this book is to explain to a mathematician having no previous knowledge in this domain, what "noncommutative probability" is. So the first decision was not to concentrate on a special topic. For different people, the starting points of such a domain may be different. In what concerns this question, different variants are not discussed. One such variant comes from Quantum Physics. The motivations in this book are mainly mathematical; more precisely, they correspond to the desire of developing a probability theory in a new set-up and obtaining results analogous to the classical ones for the newly defined mathematical objects. Also different mathematical foundations of this domain were proposed. This book concentrates on one variant, which may be described as "von Neumann algebras". This is true also for the last chapter, if one looks at its ultimate aim. In the references there are some papers corresponding to other variants; we mention Gudder, S.P. &al (1978). Segal, I.E. (1965) also discusses "basic ideas".

The aim of this research is to develop a systematic scheme that makes it possible to transform important parts of the by now classical theory of summation of general orthonormal series into a similar theory for series in noncommutative $L_p$-spaces constructed over a noncommutative measure space (a von Neumann algebra of operators acting on a Hilbert space together with a faithful normal state on this algebra).

Noncommutative Measures And Lp And Orlicz Spaces With Applications To Quantum Physics written by Stanisław Goldstein and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-19 with Mathematics categories.

The theory of noncommutative Haagerup Lp and Orlicz spaces is an important tool in both Quantum Harmonic Analysis and Mathematical Physics. Indeed, noncommutativity is arguably the raison-d'être of the Heisenberg approach to quantum mechanics. Just as classical analysis formed the foundation for classical mechanics, a mature response to the challenges posed by quantum mechanics (from the Heisenberg perspective) similarly needs to be built on a well-developed foundation of noncommutative analysis. In the passage from the classical to the quantum setting, functions get replaced with (possibly noncommuting) operators. Von Neumann himself realised early on that some sort of noncommutative integral calculus tailored to this setting is therefore needed to meet this challenge. This book seeks to help address this need. The noncommutative Orlicz spaces presented here help in dealing with observable quantities and entropy. Goldstein and Labuschagne provide a detailed account of the current theories in a way that is useful and accessible to a wide range of readers, from graduate students to advanced users. Beginning with some foundational examples intended to build intuition for the theory to follow, including the theory of noncommutative decreasing arrangements, as developed by Fack and Kosaki, and of Orlicz spaces for general von Neumann algebras. The authors then present the theory of the more accessible tracial case, followed by that of the more demanding general (type III) case. The final part of the book is devoted to advanced theory and applications.

A Comprehensive Course in Analysis by Poincaré Prize winner Barry Simon is a five-volume set that can serve as a graduate-level analysis textbook with a lot of additional bonus information, including hundreds of problems and numerous notes that extend the text and provide important historical background. Depth and breadth of exposition make this set a valuable reference source for almost all areas of classical analysis. Part 4 focuses on operator theory, especially on a Hilbert space. Central topics are the spectral theorem, the theory of trace class and Fredholm determinants, and the study of unbounded self-adjoint operators. There is also an introduction to the theory of orthogonal polynomials and a long chapter on Banach algebras, including the commutative and non-commutative Gel'fand-Naimark theorems and Fourier analysis on general locally compact abelian groups.
