Engineering structures for reliable function and safety have to be designed such that operational mechanical loads are compensated for by stresses in the components bearable by the materials used. Vhat is "bearable"? First of all it depends on the properties of the chosen materials as well as on several other parameters, e.g. temperature, corrosivity of the environment, elapsed or remaining serviceable life, unexpected deterioration of materials, whatever the source and nature of such deterioration may be: defects, loss of strength, embrittlement, wastage, etc. DEFECTS and PROPERTIES of materials currently determine loadability. Therefore in addition to nondestructive testing for defects there is also a need for nondestructive testing of properties. The third type of information to be supplied by nondestructive measurement pertains to STRESS STATES under OPERATIONAL LOADS, i.e. LOAD-INDUCED plus RESIDUAL STRESSES. Residual stresses normally cannot be calculated; they have to be measured nondestructively; well-approved elastomechanical finite element codes are available and used for calculating load-induced stresses; for redundancy and reliability, engineers, however, need procedures and instrumentation for experimental checks.

There is a great deal of interest in extending nondestructive technologies beyond the location and identification of cracks and voids. Specifically there is growing interest in the application of nondestructive evaluation (NOEl to the measurement of physical and mechanical properties of materials. The measurement of materials properties is often referred to as materials characterization; thus nondestructive techniques applied to characterization become nondestructive characterization (NDCl. There are a number of meetings, proceedings and journals focused upon nondestructive technologies and the detection and identification of cracks and voids. However, the series of symposia, of which these proceedings represent the fourth, are the only meetings uniquely focused upon nondestructive characterization. Moreover, these symposia are especially concerned with stimulating communication between the materials, mechanical and manufacturing engineer and the NDE technology oriented engineer and scientist. These symposia recognize that it is the welding of these areas of expertise that is necessary for practical development and application of NDC technology to measurements of components for in service life time and sensor technology for intelligent processing of materials. These proceedings are from the fourth international symposia and are edited by c.o. Ruud, J. F. Bussiere and R.E. Green, Jr. . The dates, places, etc of the symposia held to date area as follows: Symposia on Nondestructive Methods for TITLE: Material Property Determination DATES: April 6-8, 1983 PLACE: Hershey, PA, USA CHAIRPERSONS: C.O. As a spectroscopic method, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has seen spectacular growth over the past two decades, both as a technique and in its applications. Today the applications of NMR span a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics to biology to medicine. Each volume of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance comprises a combination of annual and biennial reports which together provide comprehensive coverage of the literature on this topic. This Specialist Periodical Report reflects the growing volume of published work involving NMR techniques and applications, in particular NMR of natural macromolecules which is covered in two reports: "NMR of Proteins and Nucleic Acids" and "NMR of Carbohydrates, Lipids and Membranes". For those wanting to become rapidly acquainted with specific areas of NMR, this title provides unrivalled scope of coverage. Seasoned practitioners of NMR will find this an invaluable source of current methods and applications. Volume 34 covers literature published from June 2003 to May 2004. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.

The demand for new and effective methods for the evaluation, maintenance and live-time testing of objects in fields as diverse as engineering, medicine and art, continues to grow. Electromagnetic non-destructive evaluation is a process by which an object can be assessed without permanent alteration by means of inducing electric currents or magnetic fields within the object and observing the electromagnetic response. This book presents selected papers from the 18th International Workshop on Electromagnetic Non-destructive Evaluation (ENDE), which was held in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, on June 25-28, 2013. The aim of the workshop was to provide an international forum for the discussion of the state-of-the-art and perspectives in the field from the view of science, technology and engineering. The book is divided into five main sections: advanced sensors; analytical and numerical modeling and biomedical applications; innovative industrial applications; new developments; and, solutions of inverse problems. Containing 40 peer-reviewed papers, it will be of interest to all those whose work involves electromagnetic non-destructive evaluation, whatever their discipline.

The Third Edition of Acoustics of Wood offers a comprehensive overview of advanced acoustical techniques for wood characterization and assessment. It stands as an authoritative guide on using ultrasound and acoustic emissions to assess and characterize wood's physical and mechanical properties. Divided into six parts, this extended and updated edition covers a broad spectrum of topics including ultrasonic wave propagation, nondestructive testing methods for wood characterization, and the innovative use of acoustics in quality assessment of wood products. It also explores the acoustic properties vital for musical instruments and the application of acoustics in preserving historically significant art objects and timber structures. With chapters on cutting-edge topics like artificial intelligence's role in wood acoustics, readers are invited to explore the intersection of tradition and technology. Targeted at professionals and researchers in materials science, engineering, and conservation, this edition is invaluable for those seeking to deepen their knowledge of wood's acoustic properties. Readers with a background in physics or engineering will find the discussions on ultrasonic techniques and acoustic emissions particularly enlightening. By bridging theoretical concepts with practical applications, this book not only enriches scientific understanding but also opens up new avenues for innovation in wood assessment and preservation.
