Robert Hugh Benson (18 November 1871 - 19 October 1914) was an English Roman Catholic priest and writer. In 1903, Benson, a Anglican priest, was received into the Catholic Church; he was ordained a Catholic priest the next year. He was also a prolific writer of fiction, writing the notable dystopian novel Lord of the World, as well as Come Rack! Come Rope!. His output encompassed historical, horror and science fiction, contemporary fiction, children's stories, plays, apologetics, devotional works and articles. He continued his writing career at the same time as he progressed through the hierarchy to become a Chamberlain to Pope Pius X in 1911 and gain the title of Monsignor, before his death a few years later.

The story is of the Honorable Frank Guiseley, second son of an English nobleman, and, in the first chapters, student at Cambridge. Frank has become a Catholic, and in consequence has been cast off by his father without even the proverbial shilling. He startles his friends by announcing an auction sale of his furniture, books, and clothes; later, armed with the resultant thirteen pounds and his exeat from Cambridge, he "takes to the roads" very literally and determinedly. To the remonstrances of his friend Jack Kirkby, Frank's reply is, "I'm going to find out things for myself."

These two young men were sitting in one of the most pleasant places in all the world in which to sit on a summer evening—in a ground-floor room looking out upon the Great Court of Trinity College, Cambridge. It was in that short space of time, between six and seven, during which the Great Court is largely deserted. The athletes and the dawdlers have not yet returned from field and river; and Fellows and other persons, young enough to know better, who think that a summer evening was created for the reading of books, have not yet emerged from their retreats. A white-aproned cook or two moves across the cobbled spaces with trays upon their heads; a tradesman's boy comes out of the corner entrance from the hostel; a cat or two stretches himself on the grass; but, for the rest, the court lies in broad sunshine; the shadows slope eastwards, and the fitful splash and trickle of the fountain asserts itself clearly above the gentle rumble of Trinity Street.

Frank Guiseley was a student at Cambridge when he decided to enter the priesthood. When he heard of that, his father disowned him, leaving without much more than the clothes on his back.
