Nonlinear partial differential equations abound in modern physics. The problems arising in these fields lead to fascinating questions and, at the same time, progress in understanding the mathematical structures is of great importance to the models. Nevertheless, activity in one of the approaches is not always sufficiently in touch with developments in the other field. The book presents the joint efforts of mathematicians and physicists involved in modelling reactive flows, in particular superconductivity and superfluidity. Certain contributions are fundamental to an understanding of such cutting-edge research topics as rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, Kolmogorov-Zakharov solutions for weak turbulence equations, and the propagation of fronts in heterogeneous media.

In celebration of Haim Brezis's 60th birthday, a conference was held at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, with a program testifying to Brezis's wide-ranging influence on nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. The articles in this volume are primarily from that conference. They present a rare view of the state of the art of many aspects of nonlinear PDEs, as well as describe new directions that are being opened up in this field. The articles, written by mathematicians at the center of current developments, provide somewhat more personal views of the important developments and challenges.

This is a textbook on chaos and nonlinear dynamics, written by applied mathematicians for applied mathematicians. It aims to tread a middle ground between the mathematician's rigour and the physicist’s pragmatism. While the subject matter is now classical and can be found in many other books, what distinguishes this book is its philosophical approach, its breadth, its conciseness, and its exploration of intellectual byways, as well as its liberal and informative use of illustration. Written at the graduate student level, the book occasionally drifts from classical material to explore new avenues of thought, sometimes in the exercises. A key feature of the book is its holistic approach, encompassing the development of the subject since the time of Poincaré, and including detailed material on maps, homoclinic bifurcations, Hamiltonian systems, as well as more eclectic items such as Julia and Mandelbrot sets. Some of the more involved codes to produce the figures are described in the appendix. Based on lectures to upper undergraduates and beginning graduate students, this textbook is ideally suited for courses at this level and each chapter includes a set of exercises of varying levels of difficulty.

Advanced Transport Phenomena written by L. Gary Leal and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-06-18 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Advanced Transport Phenomena is ideal as a graduate textbook. It contains a detailed discussion of modern analytic methods for the solution of fluid mechanics and heat and mass transfer problems, focusing on approximations based on scaling and asymptotic methods, beginning with the derivation of basic equations and boundary conditions and concluding with linear stability theory. Also covered are unidirectional flows, lubrication and thin-film theory, creeping flows, boundary layer theory, and convective heat and mass transport at high and low Reynolds numbers. The emphasis is on basic physics, scaling and nondimensionalization, and approximations that can be used to obtain solutions that are due either to geometric simplifications, or large or small values of dimensionless parameters. The author emphasizes setting up problems and extracting as much information as possible short of obtaining detailed solutions of differential equations. The book also focuses on the solutions of representative problems. This reflects the book's goal of teaching readers to think about the solution of transport problems.

Interfacial Flows The Power And Beauty Of Asymptotic Methods written by Bernhard Scheichl and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-29 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents the state of the art of asymptotic and related mathematical methods, and how to apply them, as the means of choice, to representative building blocks of interfacial-flow phenomena. After an introduction which exemplifies the application of perturbation techniques in describing the well-known teapot effect, chapter 2 covers the status quo of the theory of inviscid sloshing and the associated modal analysis of free-surface waves; and chapter 3 envisages the intersection between dimensional analysis, scaling laws and the reduction of the governing partial differential equations to ordinary ones. The other chapters focus on, respectively, the singularity formation in free surfaces as a self-similar phenomenon in thin-film dynamics, the elastohydrodynamic lubrication by weakly viscoelastic fluids, and the inertia-free film flows under gravity with contact lines. It addresses graduate students and early-career researchers interested in theoretical fluid mechanics and its mathematical foundations, but also experienced scientists, actively employing perturbation analysis for long, who want to broaden their horizon.

The effects of weak and strong advection on the dynamics of reaction-diffusion models have long been studied. In contrast, the role of intermediate advection remains poorly understood. For example, concentration phenomena can occur when advection is strong, providing a mechanism for the coexistence of multiple populations, in contrast with the situation of weak advection where coexistence may not be possible. The transition of the dynamics from weak to strong advection is generally difficult to determine. In this work the authors consider a mathematical model of two competing populations in a spatially varying but temporally constant environment, where both species have the same population dynamics but different dispersal strategies: one species adopts random dispersal, while the dispersal strategy for the other species is a combination of random dispersal and advection upward along the resource gradient. For any given diffusion rates the authors consider the bifurcation diagram of positive steady states by using the advection rate as the bifurcation parameter. This approach enables the authors to capture the change of dynamics from weak advection to strong advection. The authors determine three different types of bifurcation diagrams, depending on the difference of diffusion rates. Some exact multiplicity results about bifurcation points are also presented. The authors' results can unify some previous work and, as a case study about the role of advection, also contribute to the understanding of intermediate (relative to diffusion) advection in reaction-diffusion models.
