This book introduces stochastic dynamical systems theory in order to synthesize our current knowledge of climate variability. Nonlinear processes, such as advection, radiation and turbulent mixing, play a central role in climate variability. These processes can give rise to transition phenomena, associated with tipping or bifurcation points, once external conditions are changed. The theory of dynamical systems provides a systematic way to study these transition phenomena. Its stochastic extension also forms the basis of modern (nonlinear) data analysis techniques, predictability studies and data assimilation methods. Early chapters apply the stochastic dynamical systems framework to a hierarchy of climate models to synthesize current knowledge of climate variability. Later chapters analyse phenomena such as the North Atlantic Oscillation, El Niño/Southern Oscillation, Atlantic Multidecadal Variability, Dansgaard–Oeschger events, Pleistocene ice ages and climate predictability. This book is a revised edition of my earlier book of the same title. The cur rent edition adopts the structure of the earlier version but is much changed. The introduction now contains definitions of stability. Chapters 2 to 4 ex plain stability and the energy method in more depth and new sections dealing with porous media are provided. Chapters 5 to 13 are revisions of those in the earlier edition. However, chapters 6 to 12 are substantially revised, brought completely up to date, and have much new material in. Throughout the book new results are provided which are not available elsewhere. Six new chapters, 14 - 19, are provided dealing with topics of current interest. These cover the topics of multi-component convection diffusion, convection in a compressible fluid, convection with temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity, the subject of penetrative convection whereby part of the fluid layer can penetrate into another, nonlinear sta bility in the oceans, and finally in chapter 19 practical methods for solving numerically the eigenvalue problems which arise are presented. The book presents convection studies in a variety of fluid and porous media contexts. It should be accessible to a wide audience and begins at an elementary level. Many new references are provided.

Professor Bennett's work explores the potential for inverse theory, emphasizing possibilities rather than expedient or rudimentary applications. In addition to interpolating the data and adding realism to the model solutions, the methods can yield estimates for unobserved flow variables, forcing fields, and model parameters. Inverse formulations can resolve ill-posed modeling problems, lead to design criteria for oceanic observing systems, and enable the testing of models as scientific hypothesis. Ocean models considered range from linear, finite-dimensional systems of equality and inequality constraints, to nonlinear, regional primitive-equation models. Examples from the recent oceanographic literature are analyzed, and several outstanding research problems are surveyed. The methods employ solution techniques including Kalman filters and smoothers, representer expansions and descent algorithms. Exercises of varying difficulty rehearse technical skills and supplement the central theoretical development.
