Rogue and shock waves are phenomena that may occur in the propagation of waves in any nonlinear dispersive medium. Accordingly, they have been observed in disparate settings – as ocean waves, in nonlinear optics, in Bose-Einstein condensates, and in plasmas. Rogue and dispersive shock waves are both characterized by the development of extremes: for the former, the wave amplitude becomes unusually large, while for the latter, gradients reach extreme values. The Standard Model of elementary particles, although very successful, contains various elements that are put in by hand. Understanding their origin requires going beyond the model and searching for “new physics”. The present book elaborates on one particular proposal concerning such physics. While the original conception is 50 years old, it has not lost its appeal over time. Its basic idea is that space — an arena of events treated in the Standard Model as a classical background — is a concept which emerges from a strictly discrete quantum layer in the limit of large quantum numbers. This book discusses an extension of this view by replacing space with phase space. It combines the results of the author's research papers and places them in much broader philosophical and phenomenological contexts, thus providing further arguments in favor of the proposed alternative. Our motivation for writing this book is twofold: First, the theory of waves propagating in randomly layered media has been studied extensively during the last thirty years but the results are scattered in many di?erent papers. This theory is now in a mature state, especially in the very interesting regime of separation of scales as introduced by G. Papanicolaou and his coauthors and described in [8], which is a building block for this book. Second, we were motivatedbythe time-reversalexperimentsofM. Finkandhis groupinParis. They were done with ultrasonic waves and have attracted considerable att- tion because of the surprising e?ects of enhanced spatial focusing and time compression in random media. An exposition of this work and its appli- tions is presented in [56]. Time reversal experiments were also carried out with sonar arrays in shallow water by W. Kuperman [113] and his group in San Diego. The enhanced spatial focusing and time compression of signals in time reversal in randommedia have many diverse applications in detection and in focused energy delivery on small targets as, for example, in the - struction of kidney stones. Enhanced spatial focusing is also useful in sonar and wireless communications for reducing interference. Time reversal ideas have played an important role in the development of new methods for array imaging in random media as presented in [19].

ill the past three decades there has been enonnous progress in identifying the es sential role that "nonlinearity" plays in physical systems. Classical nonlinear wave equations can support localized, stable "soliton" solutions, and nonlinearities in quantum systems can lead to self-trapped excitations, such as polarons. Since these nonlinear excitations often dominate the transport and response properties of the systems in which they exist, accurate modeling of their effects is essential to interpreting a wide range of physical phenomena. Further, the dramatic de velopments in "deterministic chaos", including the recognition that even simple nonlinear dynamical systems can produce seemingly random temporal evolution, have similarly demonstrated that an understanding of chaotic dynamics is vital to an accurate interpretation of the behavior of many physical systems. As a conse quence of these two developments, the study of nonlinear phenomena has emerged as a subject in its own right. During these same three decades, similar progress has occurred in understand ing the effects of "disorder". Stimulated by Anderson's pioneering work on "dis ordered" quantum solid state materials, this effort has also grown into a field that now includes a variety of classical and quantum systems and treats "disorder" arising from many sources, including impurities, random spatial structures, and stochastic applied fields. Significantly, these two developments have occurred rather independently, with relatively little overlapping research.
