The introductory statistics course presents serious pedagogical problems to the instructor. For the great majority of students, the course represents the only formal contact with statistical thinking that he or she will have in college. Students come from many different fields of study, and a large number suffer from math anxiety. Thus, an instructor who is willing to settle for some limited objectives will have a much better chance of success than an instructor who aims for a broad exposure to statistics. Many statisticians agree that the primary objective of the introductory statistics course is to introduce students to variability and uncertainty and how to cope with them when drawing inferences from observed data. Addi tionally, the introductory COurse should enable students to handle a limited number of useful statistical techniques. The present text, which is the successor to the author's Introduction to Statistics: A Nonparametric Approach (Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1976), tries to meet these objectives by introducing the student to the ba sic ideas of estimation and hypothesis testing early in the course after a rather brief introduction to data organization and some simple ideas about probability. Estimation and hypothesis testing are discussed in terms of the two-sample problem, which is both conceptually simpler and more realistic than the one-sample problem that customarily serves as the basis for the discussion of statistical inference.

Nonparametric tests are valuable to experimenters and operations analysts for three reasons: ease of explanation to non-statisticians, simplicity of computation, and applicability to data sets which cannot be analyzed by parametric tests. Reasons for unsuitability of parametric test include data of nominal or ordinal level of measurement, lack of common variance, or lack of normal distribution of the underlying population. There are two programs provided: Lochinvar, an interactive Pascal program, and Crunch, a Fortran program. Lochinvar is designed to prompt and screen a user's entry of data and options. Crunch performs calculations; it is suitable for use in whole or part as a subcomponent of other programs. (Author).

This book was written for those who need to know how to collect, analyze and present data. It is meant to be a first course for practitioners, a book for private study or brush-up on statistics, and supplementary reading for general statistics classes. The book is untraditional, both with respect to the choice of topics and the presentation. The topics were determined by what is most useful for practical statistical work: even experienced statisticians will find new topics or new approaches to traditional topics. The presentation is as non-mathematical as possible. Mathematical formulae are presented only if they are necessary for calculations and/or add to readers’ understanding. A sample survey is developed as a realistic example throughout the book, and many further examples are presented, which also use data spreadsheets from a supplementary website.
