Norfolk Gravestone Inscriptions written by David Bird and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05 with categories.

This book is a follow up to the previous 6 editions of Norfolk Gravestone Inscriptions. This particular edition covers another new area of Norfolk from that of the last one which includes the following churches: - Dunton, Greatt Massingham, Harpley, Little Massingham, Shereford, South Raynham, Toftrees, Weasenham All Saints, Weasenham St Peter, West Rudham There are around 575 gravestone inscriptions yet again in this volume making this a well packed edition. The time taken to record these lovely old tombstones seemed endless due to the weathering of the stonework making them very hard to read. Another reason for the struggle was that a lot of the epitaphs have lichens and moss growth which I never attempt to remove for fear of damaging the stonework and spoiling the ecology of that area. In many of the churchyards that I've visited there were trees that overhang these monuments causing an increasing amount of dampness on the gravestones thus causing erosion which makes this task even harder to perform. I have tried extremely hard to transcribe these as accurately as I possibly could, but must apologise for any errors that may be found. The book is issued in the hope that it will at least archive many of these gravestones (tombstone, memorials or epitaphs) to enable others to read in years to come. At least I can say that I have recorded some of them for posterity, especially for families who are trying to research their own history here in Norfolk. The list consists mainly of inscriptions that are pre 1900's. As you can imagine, the work of transcribing these has taken me many, many hours and also lots of sleepless nights in order to preserve what's left of these wonderful pieces of social history. I do hope that you'll perhaps find some of your own families here in this book. Here are just a few of the surnames that are listed within the book and are as follows: - Alegood, Arter, Balders, Brunton, Caller, Chilvers, Diggings, Ducker, Eake, Elphinstone, Fake, Fitzroy, Gascogne, Gunton, Hagram, Hotching, Jessop, Kidall, Knock, Lincoln's, Lowe, Mack, Meredith, Newell, Ockley, Osbitson, Patfield, Pilch, Quantrill, Rathborn, Rollin, Savory, Sooby, Townsend, Wagner, Woomes and many, many more. I also have a website where you are able to see the various churches that have already been transcribed. There's also a link within my books that will take you there. I do keep digital photographic copies of the gravestones that have been recorded and these can be ordered for a small fee by quoting a specific code number within the book. Please state the particular transcription of your ancestor that you're interested in. If you require more information please go to my Feedback Page on the website listed within the book and send me a quick line.

The transcribing of Norfolk Gravestone Inscriptions was a long and sometimes challenging experience but David Bird has had this overwhelming passion to get as many of these written down as possible. Over the last few years he has noticed that these wonderful old relics of the past are deteriorating at an alarming rate, their writings will soon be lost forever due to the weathering of the stonework. We must protect and respect these wonderful pieces of ancient history and hope that others who come after us will do the same. In this volume you will find the following churches :- Marham, Middleton, Narborough, North Runcton, Pentney, Setchey, Shouldham, Tottenhill, West Bilney and West Winch. Among these memorials, epitaphs or tombstones as they are sometimes called there are some beautiful words of comfort, verses of poetry, and even some that are funny. These wonderful epitaphs are an important part of our family history, they have sometimes been used in breaking down brick walls for family historians. This book will hopefully be an archive to the lives of those people who have passed on before us and will be there for others who come after our own time. Please read and remember all of those people who lived their lives many years ago. There are over 750 inscriptions inside this book and there's also the opportunity to purchase a digital copy of the actual gravestone if you require one.
