This volume presents new research on normal forms, symmetry, homoclinic cycles, and chaos, from the Workshop on Normal Forms and Homoclinic Chaos held during The Fields Institute Program Year on Dynamical Systems and Bifurcation Theory in November 1992, in Waterloo, Canada. The workshop bridged the local and global analysis of dynamical systems with emphasis on normal forms and the recently discovered homoclinic cycles which may arise in normal forms. Specific topics covered in this volume include normal forms for dissipative, conservative, and reversible vector fields, and for symplectic maps; the effects of symmetry on normal forms; the persistence of homoclinic cycles; symmetry-breaking, both spontaneous and induced; mode interactions; resonances; intermittency; numerical computation of orbits in phase space; applications to flow-induced vibrations and to mechanical and structural systems; general methods for calculation of normal forms; and chaotic dynamics arising from normal forms. Of the 32 presentations given at this workshop, 14 of them are represented by papers in this volume.

Chaos Near Resonance written by G. Haller and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

Resonances are ubiquitous in dynamical systems with many degrees of freedom. They have the basic effect of introducing slow-fast behavior in an evolutionary system which, coupled with instabilities, can result in highly irregular behavior. This book gives a unified treatment of resonant problems with special emphasis on the recently discovered phenomenon of homoclinic jumping. After a survey of the necessary background, a general finite dimensional theory of homoclinic jumping is developed and illustrated with examples. The main mechanism of chaos near resonances is discussed in both the dissipative and the Hamiltonian context. Previously unpublished new results on universal homoclinic bifurcations near resonances, as well as on multi-pulse Silnikov manifolds are described. The results are applied to a variety of different problems, which include applications from beam oscillations, surface wave dynamics, nonlinear optics, atmospheric science and fluid mechanics. The theory is further used to study resonances in Hamiltonian systems with applications to molecular dynamics and rigid body motion. The final chapter contains an infinite dimensional extension of the finite dimensional theory, with application to the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation and coupled NLS equations.

Chaos In Chemistry And Biochemistry written by Richard J. Field and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Science categories.

True deterministic chaos is characterized by unpredictable, apparently random motion in a dynamical system completely described by a deterministic dynamic law, usually a nonlinear differential equation, with no stochastic component. The inability to predict future behavior of a chaotic system occurs because trajectories evolving from arbitrarily close initial conditions diverge. Chaos is universal as it may arise in any system governed by one of a class of quite common, suitable nonlinear dynamic laws. This book discusses both the experimental observation and theoretical interpretation of chaos in chemical and biochemical systems. Examples are drawn from the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, surface reactions, electrochemical reactions, enzyme reactions, and periodically perturbed oscillating systems.

This symposium brought together mechanicians, physicists and applied mathematicians to discuss the interdisciplinary topic of nonlinear wave motion, which displays effects that give rise to a multitude of unanswered questions. Nonlinear waves in fluids in particular display all the prominent nonlinear phenomena such as chaos, turbulence and pattern formation. Amongst the topics emphasized in these proceedings are: travelling fronts, solitary waves and periodic waves (dissipative and conservative); temporal and spatial asymptotics of perturbations of waves; bifurcations, stability and local dynamics of waves; interaction between different waves, and between waves and the mean flow; wave breaking, nonlinear effects on focussing and diffraction; modulation and envelope equations (their derivation and validity); and numerical and experimental results.

The Arnoldfest written by Vladimir Igorevich Arnolʹd and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Mathematics categories.

This volume presents articles originating from invited talks at an exciting international conference held at The Fields Institute in Toronto celebrating the sixtieth birthday of the renowned mathematician, Vladimir Arnold. Experts from the world over--including several from "Arnold's school"--gave illuminating talks and lively poster sessions. The presentations focused on Arnold's main areas of interest: singularity theory, the theory of curves, symmetry groups, dynamical systems, mechanics, and related areas of mathematics. The book begins with notes of three lectures by V. Arnold given in the framework of the Institute's Distinguished Lecturer program. The topics of the lectures are: (1) From Hilbert's Superposition Problem to Dynamical Systems (2) Symplectization, Complexification, and Mathematical Trinities (3) Topological Problems in Wave Propagation Theory and Topological Economy Principle in Algebraic Geometry. Arnold's three articles include insightful comments on Russian and Western mathematics and science. Complementing the first is Jurgen Moser's "Recollections", concerning some of the history of KAM theory.

Symplectic And Contact Topology written by Y. Eliashberg and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-01-01 with Mathematics categories.

The papers presented in this volume are written by participants of the ''Symplectic and Contact Topology, Quantum Cohomology, and Symplectic Field Theory'' symposium. The workshop was part of a semester-long joint venture of The Fields Institute in Toronto and the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques in Montreal. The twelve papers cover the following topics: Symplectic Topology, the interaction between symplectic and other geometric structures, and Differential Geometry and Topology. The Proceeding concludes with two papers that have a more algebraic character. One is related to the program of Homological Mirror Symmetry: the author defines a category of extended complex manifolds and studies its properties. The subject of the final paper is Non-commutative Symplectic Geometry, in particular the structure of the symplectomorphism group of a non-commutative complex plane. The in-depth articles make this book a useful reference for graduate students as well as research mathematicians.

Lars Ahlfors's Lectures on Quasiconformal Mappings, based on a course he gave at Harvard University in the spring term of 1964, was first published in 1966 and was soon recognized as the classic it was shortly destined to become. These lectures develop the theory of quasiconformal mappings from scratch, give a self-contained treatment of the Beltrami equation, and cover the basic properties of Teichmuller spaces, including the Bers embedding and the Teichmuller curve. It isremarkable how Ahlfors goes straight to the heart of the matter, presenting major results with a minimum set of prerequisites. Many graduate students and other mathematicians have learned the foundations of the theories of quasiconformal mappings and Teichmuller spaces from these lecture notes. This editionincludes three new chapters. The first, written by Earle and Kra, describes further developments in the theory of Teichmuller spaces and provides many references to the vast literature on Teichmuller spaces and quasiconformal mappings. The second, by Shishikura, describes how quasiconformal mappings have revitalized the subject of complex dynamics. The third, by Hubbard, illustrates the role of these mappings in Thurston's theory of hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds. Together, these threenew chapters exhibit the continuing vitality and importance of the theory of quasiconformal mappings. This book is a collection of research and expository papers reflecting the interfacing of two fields: nonlinear dynamics (in the physiological and biological sciences) and statistics. It presents theproceedings of a four-day workshop entitled ''Nonlinear Dynamics and Time Series: Building a Bridge Between the Natural and Statistical Sciences'' held at the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques (CRM) in Montreal in July 1995. The goal of the workshop was to provide an exchange forum and to create a link between two diverse groups with a common interest in the analysis of nonlinear time series data. The editors and peer reviewers of this work have attempted to minimize the problems ofmaintaining communication between the different scientific fields. The result is a collection of interrelated papers that highlight current areas of research in statistics that might have particular applicability to nonlinear dynamics and new methodology and open data analysis problems in nonlinear dynamicsthat might find their way into the toolkits and research interests of statisticians. Features: A survey of state-of-the-art developments in nonlinear dynamics time series analysis with open statistical problems and areas for further research. Contributions by statisticians to understanding and improving modern techniques commonly associated with nonlinear time series analysis, such as surrogate data methods and estimation of local Lyapunov exponents. Starting point for both scientists andstatisticians who want to explore the field. Expositions that are readable to scientists outside the featured fields of specialization.
