The Phylogenetic Relationships Of Soft Shelled Turtles Family Trionychidae written by Peter Andre Meylan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Reptiles categories.

Phylogenetic analysis of nearly one hundred characters of the osteology of trionychid turtles provides abundant data on the phyletic relationships of this family to other turtles and on the interrelationships of its members. These data suggest that the family Trionychidae shares a unique common ancestor with the Dermatemydidae, Kinosternidae and Carettochelyidae , and that the Kinosternidae shares a unique common ancestor with the Trionychidae and Carettochelyidae. Furthermore, it is the staurotypine kinosternids that are most closely related to the Trionychidae and Carettochelyidae. Carettochelyids and trionychids share numerous unique features and constitute a monophyletic group . Within the Trionychidae, the subfamilies Cyclanorbinae and Trionychinae are recognized as monophyletic clades. Recognition of three cyclanorbine genera, Cycloderma , Cyclanorbis and Lissemys , is warranted. Within the Trionychinae, four distinct clades are recognized. The Trionyx cartilaglneus group includes Chitra indica and Pelochelys bibroni on the basis of the unique location of the foramen posterior canalis carotici interni, and features of the trigeminal region. The North American group, which includes T. triunguis , T. euphraticus , T. swinhoei , T. ferox , T. spiniferus and T. muticus, can be recognized by the presence of eight or fewer neurals (first and second are fused), deeply emarginate prefrontals and a large contribution by the parietal to the processus trochlearis oticum. The Indian group includes four species: T. gangeticus , T. hurum , T. leithii and T. nigricans . All exhibit a free first neural, five plastral callosities and intermediately extended epiplastra. Lastly, the T. steindachneri group is diagnosed by a descending spine of the opisthotic which divides the fenestra postotica in most specimens. Two equally parsimonious arrangements of the Trionychinae differ in the placement of the North American clade. In one, this clade is the sister group of the T. cartilagineus clade; in the other it is the sister group of the T. steindachneri clade. In both, the Indian group is paraphyletic and gives rise to the T. steindachneri clade. A tentative revision of the classification of the family Trionychidae is provided. In it, five generic names currently in the synonymy of Trionyx are resurrected to denote unique clades of trionychine turtles.

Legler and Vogt draw on more than fifty years of fieldwork to elucidate the natural history of these species. The volume includes an extensive introduction to turtle anatomy, taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, and physiology. A key to the turtles of Mexico is included along with individual species accounts featuring geographic distribution maps and detailed color illustrations. Specific topics discussed for each species include habitat, diet, feeding behavior, reproduction, predators, parasites, growth and ontogeny, sexual dimorphism, growth rings, economic use, conservation, legal protection, and taxonomic studies. This book is a complete reference for scientists, conservationists, and professional and amateur enthusiasts who wish to study Mexican turtles.

Morphology And Evolution Of Turtles written by Donald B. Brinkman and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-14 with Science categories.

This volume celebrates the contributions of Dr. Eugene Gaffney to the study of turtles, through a diverse and complementary collection of papers that showcases the latest research on one of the most intriguing groups of reptiles. A mix of focused and review papers deals with numerous aspects of the evolutionary history of turtles, including embryonic development, origins, early diversification, phylogenetic relationships, and biogeography. Moreover it includes reports on important but poorly understood fossil turtle assemblages, provides historical perspectives on turtle research, and documents disease and variation in turtles. With its broad scope, which includes descriptions of material and new taxa from Australia, Asia, and Europe, as well as North and South America, this work will be an essential resource for anyone interested in the morphology and evolution of turtles. “This volume’s breadth of time, geography, and taxonomic coverage makes it a major contribution to the field and a ‘must have’ for all vertebrate paleontologists.”, James F. Parham, California State University, CA, USA “A comprehensive and sweeping overview of turtle evolution by the top experts in the field that will interest everyone curious about these unique reptiles.” Jason S. Anderson, University of Calgary, Canada “An invaluable addition to the literature that covers the full spectrum of approaches toward understanding the evolution of these noble creatures.” Ann C. Burke, Wesleyan University, CT , USA “A truly comprehensive volume that both the student of fossil turtles, as well as the general reader interested in these enigmatic creatures, will find fascinating.” Tyler Lyson, Yale University, CT, USA

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the location of one of the best-known terrestrial records for the late Cretaceous. Prior fieldwork confirmed the richness of the area, but a major effort begun in the new century has documented over 2,000 new vertebrate fossil sites, provided new radiometric dates, and identified five new genera of ceratopsids, two new species of hadrosaur, a probable new genus of hypsilophodontid, new pachycephalosaurs and ankylosaurs, several kinds of theropods (including a new genus of oviraptor and a new tyrannosaur), plus the most complete specimen of a Late Cretaceous therizinosaur ever collected from North America, and much more. The research documented in this book is rewriting our understanding of Late Cretaceous paleobiogeography and dinosaur phyletics. At the Top of the Grand Staircase: The Late Cretaceous of Southern Utah is a major stepping stone toward a total synthesis of the ecology and evolution of the Late Cretaceous ecosystems of western North America.

Winner, 2011 Book Award, The Wildlife Society2009 Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Ernst and Lovich’s thoroughly revised edition of this classic reference provides the most updated information ever assembled on the natural histories of North American turtles. From diminutive mud turtles to giant alligator snappers, two of North America’s most prominent experts describe the turtles that live in the fresh, brackish, and marine waters north of Mexico. Incorporating the explosion of new scientific information published on turtles over the past fifteen years—including the identification of four new species—Ernst and Lovich supply comprehensive coverage of all fifty-eight species, with discussions of conservation status and recovery efforts. Each species account contains information on identification, genetics, fossil record, distribution, geographic variation, habitat, behavior, reproduction, biology, growth and longevity, food habits, populations, predators, and conservation status. The book includes range maps for freshwater and terrestrial species, a glossary of scientific names, an extensive bibliography for further research, and an index to scientific and common names. Logically organized and richly illustrated—with more than two hundred color photographs and fifty-two maps—Turtles of the United States and Canada remains the standard for libraries, museums, nature centers, field biologists, and professional and amateur herpetologists alike.

For each species the authors offer a description that includes characteristics useful in distinguishing the species from similar ones and information on the variation, distribution, and natural history of the species in the state. Each account is accompanied by a range map and at least one detailed drawing that shows characteristics important for identification. A section of color photographs aids in identification of reptiles.
