Florida Historical Society Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award Highlighting the long unacknowledged role of a group of pioneering professional women, The Public Health Nurses of Jim Crow Florida tells the story of healthcare workers who battled racism in a state where white supremacy formed the bedrock of society. They aimed to serve those people out of reach of modern medical care. In the era of Jim Crow discrimination, their marginalization in medical facilities—along with the overall medical neglect to address their health—meant that many African Americans in rural communities rarely saw doctors. Christine Ardalan shows how Florida’s public health nurses took up the charge, traveling into the Florida scrub to deliver health improvement information to the homes of Black and white residents, many of whom were illiterate. Drawing on a rich body of public health and nursing records, Ardalan draws attention to the innovative ways nurses bridged the gap between these communities and government policies that addressed threats of infection and high rates of infant and maternal mortality. From the progressive era to the civil rights movement, Florida’s public health nurses worked to overcome the constraints of segregation. Their story is echoed by the experiences of today’s community health nurses, who are keenly aware that maintaining healthy lives for all Americans requires tackling the nation’s deep-rooted cultural challenges.

The image of the nurse is ubiquitous, both in life and in popular media. One of the earliest instances of nursing and media intersecting is the Edison phonographic recording of Florence Nightingale's voice in 1890. Since then, a parade of nurses, good, bad or otherwise, has appeared on both cinema and television screens. How do we interpret the many different types of nurses--real and fictional, lifelike and distorted, sexual and forbidding--who are so visible in the public consciousness? This book is a comprehensive collection of unique insights from scholars across the Western world. Essays explore a diversity of nursing types that traverse popular characterizations of nurses from various time periods. The shifting roles of nurses are explored across media, including picture postcards, film, television, journalism and the collection and preservation of uniforms and memorabilia.

Nurse In The North written by Barbara Ancott-Johnson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1973 with Medical categories.

"This highly readable book describes some of the experiences, amusing and otherwise, of a district nurse in a remote and quite unique corner of New Zealand. The time was about thirty years ago -- the 1940s -- and the district concerned lay just south of the Hokianga Harbour, Northland, with the Waiopoua Forest cutting it off from places further south. This was within the area presided over by Dr George McCall Smith, the redoubtable, unconventional "backblocks doctor", writer and medical pioneer, then nearing the end of his long period of devoted service to the Hokianga. The roads were rough and gravelly, there was no electricity and the population of the district was five-sixths Maori -- lovable people but still just getting accustomed to Pakeha ways. From these ingredients Barbara Ancott-Johnson has prepared a real "Hokianga" for the reader -- the chunky meat sandwiches beloved of Dr Smith became known as "Hokiangas". The meat in this sandwich is undoubtedly Dr Smith himself, or "Jock" as his nurses called him. Her account is invaluable alone as a first hand study of this remarkable man. But the fresh bread and butter of this book is her own story of district nursing under primitive conditions -- her dealings with situations, crises and people, with the Maori people, old and young, taking pride of place ..."--Inside front cover.
