An exciting and fast paced adventure story based in colonial America. Written from the viewpoint of a fictional friend of the Historic Robert Rodgers, famed in America as the leader of 'Rodgers' Rangers' a guerrilla squadron harassing the English forces throughout the American War of Independence. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The Northwest Passage tells three stories, one past, one present and one future. In the late twentieth century an unemployed history teacher locates the journal of a lost eighteenth century expedition in search of a Northwest Passage. He begins editing the journals in hopes of finding a job. In the distant future a scholar rediscovers both the eighteenth century journals and twentieth century editions, giving an ominous interpretation of the present and future. The language of the three periods moves from being distinct to converging into one language in a chorus of distant voices.

Spanning 200 years, Northwest Passages brings together thoughts on the region and its people from such notable writers and personalities as George Vancouver, Chief Seattle, Rudyard Kipling, Raymond Carver, Mary McCarthy, Jack Kerouac, and Sallie Tisdale. Northwesterners, surmises editor Bruce Barcott, are loners and individualists. The lives and writings of these people are inextricably tied to the land and its natural forces. Through historical and contemporary fiction, essays, poetry, and journals, Northwest Passages reveals the underlying spirit that shapes the Northwest identity, and the beauty of both its inner and outer landscapes.

First published in 1856, The Discovery of a Northwest Passage is comprised of McClure's logs and journals from his time in the Arctic from 1850 to 1854. What began as a joint venture between commanding captain Richard Collinson of the Enterprise and Captain McClure, as his subordinate on the Investigator, became a solitary expedition. Separated along the way, McClure took a dangerous shortcut through the Aleutian Islands and ended up in the Bering Strait, ahead of his commanding ship. His route carried him to Banks Island and to the discovery of the Prince of Wales Strait. The first-hand account tells of the two harsh winters that McClure and his crew spent iced in the Bay of Mercy. And their rescue in 1853, when many from the ship were found suffering malnutrition and on the brink of death.

Be careful what you wish for. Young men in search of adventure... explorers driven to investigate the ends of the earth... a girl trying to find the perfect hiding place... a curiosity-seeker drawn to an abandoned amusement park. All of them are looking for something -- and unfortunately, they usually find it. For the very unlucky, it sometimes finds them! In these ten spellbinding stories by World Fantasy Award winner Barbara Roden, very little is as innocent as it seems; but much is haunting, enigmatic, and terrifying. Where the Twilight Zone ends, the Northwest Passages begin.
