This edited book contributes to the growing field of self-translation studies by exploring the diversity of roles the practice has in Spanish-speaking contexts of production on both sides of the Atlantic. Part I surveys the presence of self-translation in contemporary Indigenous literatures in Spanish America, with a focus on Mexico and the Mapuche poetry of Chile and Argentina. Part II proposes to incorporate self-translation into the history of Spanish-American literatures- including its relation with colonial multilingual-translation practices, the transfers it allowed between the French and Spanish-American avant-gardes, and the insertion it offered for exiled Republicans in Mexico. Part III develops new reflections on the Iberian realm: on the choice between self and allograph translation Basque writers must face, a new category in Xosé Dasilva’s typology, based on the Galician context, and the need to expand the analysis of directionality in Catalan self-translations. This book brings together contributions from some of the leading international experts in translation and self-translation, and it will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of Translation Studies, Cultural Studies, Comparative Literature, Spanish Literature, Spanish American and Latin American Literature, and Amerindian Literatures.

Huinca Loo (Tierra para todos) es un relato de pasiones profundas, de amores y odios entre “civilizados” y “salvajes” en la frontera de “los desiertos del sur”. Si los Estados Unidos tuvieron su Far West, la Argentina tuvo su Far South en el que la maestría narrativa de Xavier Alcalá introduce de inmediato al lector. A pesar de la gran relación histórica entre España y la Argentina, hasta la primera publicación de Huinca Loo (1982) no se conocía obra de ningún narrador español el respecto de la epopeya relatada por Alcalá. En ella son figuras principales inmigrantes españoles y criollos hijos de españoles. Junto a ellos, ingleses, irlandeses, italianos, daneses, mestizos, indios... comparten la visión de las pampas vírgenes, el inmenso mar de hierba que cruzaban las caravanas de carretas, “caracoles de la Civilización”, antes de que el ferrocarril se expandiese. La historia base de esta narración es real. El personaje protagónico del conquistador del sur ignoto se parece mucho a un noble gallego, hijo de grande de España. Este, arruinado, se suicidó ante de su heredero al pie de la Torre de Hércules coruñesa. El hijo, tan pobre como los demás emigrantes, cruzó el Atlántico en tiempos del Romanticismo para llegar a ser un gran luchador, emprendedor y fomentador del progreso. Terrateniente incapaz de medir sus propiedades a fines del XIX, hizo pasar por sus estancias el ferrocarril, junto a cuyas estaciones se formaron pueblos con el nombre de su fundador y de su lugar de origen. Admirado y homenajeado, sin embargo en su vida y su muerte hubo oscuridades que su hijo –a quien suplanta Xavier Alcalá– se empeña en aclarar.

Contributions of Iberian-born writers have gone largely unrecognized by most European and American readers. The rich history of literary achievements in the Iberian Penninsula is now available in this unprecedented dictionary. Defining literature in the broad sense, the Dictionary includes historical, religious, cultural and philosophical writings as well as prose, poetry, and drama from the Iberian Peninsula. Virtually all entries have been composed by noted scholars and are complemented wherever possible by bibliographies of primary texts and selected critical studies as well as existing English translations of primary texts. This two-volume work generally includes literature from the tenth century to the mid-1980s and--with a few exceptions--is limited to writers born in the Iberian Peninsula. A guide to determining the format of the Dictionary was the classic Diccionario de Literatura Espanola by German Bleiberg and Julian Marias. But this updated and reworked version devotes more attention to writings by formerly neglected or forgotten works by female authors and to writers in major languages other than Spanish in the peninsula, including Portuguese, Catalan and Galician. There are also entries on major time periods, movements, and other topics. Titles of works discussed are translated to English. Wherever possible, the text of each entry is followed by a three part bibliography; and some cross-referencing. The Dictionary will appeal to English-speaking non-specialists as well as scholars of Iberian literature.
