«Of the things that have stimulated me most, I would mention "dynamic photography", something I'd never seen before then. It involves modifying the lighting within a sequence plan, not for naturalistic reasons - like switching on a light, which clearly changes the lighting - but to add emotion to the image, to suggest emotional changes. In the months before shooting, Tarkovskij told me, "I'd like to make changes in the lighting within the same sequence. Up to a point, I've already hinted at this kind of photography in Stalker, but not in any consistent way". It was one of Andrej's few specific requests, and we worked on it before shooting started. We discovered the technical answers that would make shooting easy, and procured all the necessary equipment. As a rule, we don't exploit the time factor in shooting, because we try to shoot sequences without any differences from a photographic point of view, to make it easier to edit photographically coherent frames. Tarkovskij, however, maintained that it was extremely interesting to exploit the time factor of the sequence plan, within which, by modulating the lighting, he modulated the emotions and significance of the sequence, thereby adding value. He wanted changes that did not necessarily follow any external process or physical action».

Andrei Tarkovsky S Poetics Of Cinema written by Thomas Redwood and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-11 with Performing Arts categories.

“If you look for a meaning, you’ll miss everything that happens.” Almost twenty-five years after the death of Andrei Tarkovsky, the mystery of his films remains alive and well. Recent years have witnessed an ever-increasing number of film theorists, critics and philosophers taking up the challenge to decipher what these films actually mean. But what do these films actually show us? In this study Thomas Redwood undertakes a close formal analysis of Tarkovsky’s later films. Charting the stylistic and narrative innovations in Mirror, Stalker, Nostalghia and The Sacrifice, Redwood succeeds in shedding new light on these celebrated but often misunderstood masterpieces of narrative film. Tarkovsky is revealed here both as a cinematic thinker and as an artistic practitioner, a filmmaker of immense poetic significance for the history of cinema.

The Real Gaze written by Todd McGowan and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-01 with Performing Arts categories.

Winner of the 2008 Gradiva Award, Theoretical Category, presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis The Real Gaze develops a new theory of the cinema by rethinking the concept of the gaze, which has long been central in film theory. Historically film scholars have located the gaze on the side of the spectator; however, Todd McGowan positions it within the filmic image, where it has the radical potential to disrupt the spectator's sense of identity and challenge the foundations of ideology. This book demonstrates several distinct cinematic forms that vary in terms of how the gaze functions within the films. Through a detailed investigation of directors such as Orson Welles, Claire Denis, Stanley Kubrick, Spike Lee, Federico Fellini, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Andrei Tarkovsky, Wim Wenders, and David Lynch, McGowan explores the political, cultural, and existential ramifications of these differing roles of the gaze.

Andrei Tarkovsky's Sounding Cinema adds a new dimension to our understanding and appreciation of the work of Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky (1932–1986) through an exploration of the presence of music and sound in his films. The first comprehensive study in English concentrating on the soundtrack in Tarkovsky’s cinema, this book reveals how Tarkovsky’s use of electronic music, electronically manipulated sound, traditional folk songs and fragments of canonized works of Western art music plays into the philosophical, existential and ethical themes recurring throughout his work. Exploring the multilayered relationship between music, sound, film image and narrative space, Pontara provides penetrating and innovative close readings of Solaris (1972), Mirror (1975), Stalker (1979), Nostalghia (1983) and The Sacrifice (1986) and in turn deeply enriches critical understanding of Tarkovsky’s films and their relation to the broader traditions of European art cinema. An excellent resource for scholars, researchers and students interested in European art cinema and the role of music in film, as well as for film aficionados interested in Tarkovsky’s work.

"Johnson and Petrie have produced an admirable book. Anyone who wants to make sense of Tarkovsky's films—a very difficult task in any case—must read it." —The Russian Review "This book is a model of contextual and textual analysis. . . . the Tarkovsky myth is stripped of many of its shibboleths and the thematic structure and coherence of his work is revealed in a fresh and stimulating manner." —Europe-Asia Studies "[This book,] with its wealth of new research and critical insight, has set the standard and should certainly inspire other writers to keep on trying to collectively explore the possible meanings of Tarkovsky's film world." —Canadian Journal of Film Studies "For Tarkovsky lovers as well as haters, this is an essential book. It might make even the haters reconsider." —Cineaste This definitive study, set in the context of Russian cultural history, throws new light on one of the greatest—and most misunderstood—filmmakers of the past three decades. The text is enhanced by more than 60 frame enlargements from the films.

Stanley Kubrick written by Elisa Pezzotta and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-25 with Performing Arts categories.

Although Stanley Kubrick adapted novels and short stories, his films deviate in notable ways from the source material. In particular, since 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), his films seem to definitively exploit all cinematic techniques, embodying a compelling visual and aural experience. But, as author Elisa Pezzotta contends, it is for these reasons that his cinema becomes the supreme embodiment of the sublime, fruitful encounter between the two arts and, simultaneously, of their independence. Stanley Kubrick's last six adaptations—2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987), and Eyes Wide Shut (1999)—are characterized by certain structural and stylistic patterns. These features help to draw conclusions about the role of Kubrick in the history of cinema, about his role as an adapter, and, more generally, about the art of cinematic adaptations. The structural and stylistic patterns that characterize Kubrick adaptations seem to criticize scientific reasoning, causality, and traditional semantics. In the history of cinema, Kubrick can be considered a modernist auteur. In particular, he can be regarded as an heir of the modernist avant-garde of the 1920s. However, author Elisa Pezzotta concludes that, unlike his predecessors, Kubrick creates a cinema not only centered on the ontology of the medium, but on the staging of sublime, new experiences.

Solaris Directed By Andrei Tarkovsky written by Nicolae Sfetcu and has been published by MultiMedia Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-07 with Art categories.

About the main psychological and philosophical aspects detached from the film Solaris directed by Andrei Tarkovski, as well as the cinema techniques used by the director to convey his messages to the spectator. In the "Introduction" I briefly present the relevant elements of Tarkovski's biography and an overview of Stanislav Lem's Solaris novel and the film Solaris directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. In "Cinema Technique" I talk about the specific rhythm of the scenes, the radical movement triggered by Tarkovsky in modern cinema, the role of symbolic and iconic elements, and affinities with the fantastic area of Russian literature. In Psychological Aspects I analyze the issue of communication in a human society of the future considered by Tarkovsky as rigid, the obsession of the house, and the personal evolution of Kris, Hari, and the relationships between them. In Philosophical Aspects, the film is analyzed through the philosophy of the mind (Cartesian dualism, reductionism and functionalism), the problem of personal identity, the theory of heterotopic spaces developed by Michel Foucault, and the semantic interpretations that can be deduced from the film. It also analyzes the issue of personal identity through Locke's philosophy. "Conclusions" show the general ideas of this essay, namely that Man's attempts to classify and maintain forms of interaction with unknown entities will always be condemned to failure and will reflect a major mistake in the panoptic world in which we live. In this framework of analysis of the philosophy of mind, functionalism seems to be the most intuitive. Solaris is, however, a movie that begins as a search for answers and comes to provide these answers with a whole range of different questions. Sarkis Aylak Sokak written by Emre Baykal and has been published by Arter Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-01 with Art categories.

Arter Publications’ extended programme includes the launch of two new series which accompany the opening of the institution’s new building in Dolapdere: the first is entitled Arter Close-Up and offers a closer look into a selected work from its collection; which contains more than 1,300 works as of 2019. The Close-Up series starts its journey with Sarkis’s iconic work Çaylak Sokak - an artwork that is deemed to be one of the turning points in the history of contemporary art in Turkey. The artwork, which was first exhibited at the Maçka Art Gallery in 1986, and then took part in the Wizards of the Earth exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1989, bears the same name as the street in the Talimhane district of Istanbul where Sarkis was born and raised. It is displayed once more as part of the exhibition What Time Is It? opened at the Arter’s new building in Dolapdere. Authored by Emre Baykal, the chief curator of Arter, Çaylak Sokak offers not only a multilayered reading of Sarkis’ work in different contexts intertwined with political and cultural history but also provides a personal journey constructed around the work itself. The book, designed by Esen Karol, takes a journey into the artist’s personal history accompanied by photographs taken by Hadiye Cangökçe.
