Although the existing marketing research on nostalgia has provided an understanding of nostalgia from different perspectives, it remains scattered. The confusion on the nature of nostalgia and a lack of theoretical framework on nostalgic marketing greatly restrains our understanding of nostalgic marketing. To contribute to the gaps in the marketing literature on nostalgia, this research aims to clarify the nature of nostalgia through combined effort of literature review and exploratory interviews with participants of different cultural backgrounds. Five major dimensions of nostalgia in the general sense are identified, namely emotional, attitudinal, cognitive, behavioural, and symbolic dimensions. Based on the five major dimensions that emerged for nostalgia in the general sense, nostalgia in marketing is distinguished for its unique characteristics of its separation from direct personal experiences, the dominantly positive emotion imbued, and the promotion of the imagined past. Nostalgic marketing is then defined, as well as its classification and major forms. In reference to the interviews conducted, the underlying working mechanisms of different forms of nostalgic marketing are proposed. Some pitfalls related to the application of nostalgic marketing disclosed by our interviews are also presented. The scope of this research project is extended by examining the theoretical framework empirically on three cultural groups: Canadians, Chinese, and Chinese immigrants to Canada. The findings indicate that (1) nostalgic marketing is overall more positively evaluated by Chinese and Chinese immigrants to Canada than by Canadians; (2) different cultural groups have varied preference for certain nostalgic marketing forms; and (3) a same nostalgic marketing form can be equally effective for different cultural groups but for different reasons. In explaining the findings, nostalgia proneness and individuals' general attitude toward advertising and marketing are identified as the two major influential variables. However, while nostalgia proneness should be examined within a particular cultural group, the general attitude toward advertising and marketing should be investigated across cultures.

Fragmented Memories and Screening Nostalgia for the Cultural Revolution argues that films and TV dramas about the Cultural Revolution made after China’s accession to the WTO in 2001 tend to represent personal memories in a markedly sentimental, nostalgic, and fragmented manner. This new trend is a significant departure from earlier films about the subject, which are generally interpreted as national allegories, not private expressions of grief, regret or other personal feelings. With China entering a postsocialist era, the ideological conflation of socialism and global capitalism has generated enough cultural ambiguity to allow a space for the expression of personalized reminiscences of the past. By presenting these personal memories—in effect alternative narratives to official history—on screen, individuals now seem to have some agency in narrating and constructing history. At the same time such autonomy can be easily undermined since the promotion of the sentiment of nostalgia is often subjected to commodification. Sentimental treatments of the past may simply be a marketing strategy. Underplaying political issues is also a ‘safer’ way for films and TV dramas to secure public release in mainland China. This edited book examines the significance of intangible cultural heritage to local communities and the state in Hong Kong and China. Through ethnographic studies, the various chapters in this edited book argue for the role of the local community in the creation and conservation of the intangible cultural heritage and traditions. Irrespective of whether they are selected and listed as regional, national or UNESO intangible cultural heritage, they are part of the living traditions unique to that particular local community. This edited book argues that there are threefold significance of intangible cultural heritage to the local community and the state. First, intangible cultural heritage is seen as a social prestige. Second, it acts as socio-cultural and economic capital for members of the community to tap into to ensure socio-cultural and economic sustainability of the community. The 2015 law granting Spanish nationality to the descendants of Jews expelled in 1492 is the latest example of a widespread phenomenon in contemporary Spain, the "re-discovery" of its Jewish heritage.
