This extended autobiographical essay explains in clear, engaging terms how the role of economics and finance in the Western world has shifted in the twenty-first century, from cultivating wellbeing in society to eroding the wealth of the middle class. Just a handful of years into the new millennium, globalization has had a profound impact on economies and societies throughout Europe and America. In this accessible yet literary work, Edoardo Nesi and Guido Maria Brera illustrate its effects in Italy through the changes that occurred in their own lives: while the former was forced to sell the textile company his grandfather founded before World War II, the latter became one of the key figures in European asset management. Between Bill Clinton's remarks at the Lincoln Memorial on December 31, 1999 that closed the American Century, and Donald Trump's inauguration speech, economics and finance stopped functioning as instruments constructing a healthy society and became weapons to destroy the middle class. As demagogues seduce citizens of nations across the globe, Everything Is Broken Up and Dances tells the critical story of how we corrupted what we might in retrospect call "the best of all possible worlds"--a world without banking crises, unemployment, terrorism, and populism, in which it was impossible to think that a state might default on its debt.

Highway Heist written by James T. Bennett and has been published by Independent Institute this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-03 with Business & Economics categories.

In this eye-opening book, Professor James Bennett guides readers through centuries of one of the most underrated yet widely used aspects of American life—roads. Relying on history and economic data—and with a humorous and oftentimes sharp tongue—Bennett explains how important America's highways and byways have been to everything from policymaking to everyday life. Crafting America's roads took persuasion, planning—and more taxes than any politician could have dreamed of. And far too often their realization, thanks, in Bennett's view, to flawed interpretations of the power of eminent domain, required destruction, sometimes on a massive scale, of long-established neighborhoods and important cityscapes. Likewise, the upkeep of America's highways has been the center of many a policy battle, waged by Republicans and Democrats alike. Yes, we all want roads in good working condition—but just how and who will pay for them remain contentious questions. Bennett argues persuasively that the road forward just might be a second, but more serious, sustained look at, and local experimentation with, private roads and toll roads. Agree or disagree with him, Bennett has written a significant contribution to America's ongoing debate about how her citizens should traverse, from "sea to shining sea," its fruited plain.

Patients with life-limiting diseases face many unknowns: fear of pain, death, changes in the way their bodies look and behave, worries about how their illnesses will affect their relationships. In a conventional cancer hospital, this is the story of how one nurse helps each patient cope with suffering in all its many forms. Using real-life examples drawn from her many years of clinical practice, Patrice Rancour demonstrates how the therapeutic use of self - and not a prescription pad - alleviates suffering. She draws intimate pictures of how nurses work behind the scenes, using "Courageous Conversations": that is, how to break bad news, how to talk about dying, the inevitable loss of control that comes with serious illness, how to get used to a body changed by illness and/or treatment. The goal is often how to help the patient and family actually transcend the perceived obstacles that the illness presents, so that while the body may not actually be cured, the opportunity for a life to be healed is ever present. The effort here is to help the patient and family hold themselves larger, to see that while not everything is fixed, not everything is broken either; to remind them that they are not just their bodies, and definitely not their scars. Additionally, for readers who might be curious as to how holistic therapies are integrated into a conventional treatment plan, she models the use of interventions such as guided imagery, visualization, and Reiki which can be taught and learned to address decision-making, pain, fear, grief, anxiety and depression associated with serious disease. These interventions often address spiritual - not religious - concerns that people facing their mortality often wrestle with. How to have such explorations without imposing one's own beliefs onto that patient is an exercise in self-awareness. A related issue in treating people with such illnesses is that health care professionals come into contact with people very different from themselves. Cultural competence in the face of such relationships implies that we are willing to learn from them, to ask lots of questions, to respect that the differences among us invite openings to make connections, not to erect barriers. In the end, our humanity, after all, reminds us that we all love, we all cry, we all laugh, no matter what the colors of our flags are. Another population inside the hospital worthy of attention are the health care providers who minister to the sick. As the first responders who 'run into the burning building while everyone else is running out,' health care providers are exposed to long hours of contact trauma, that is providing care to people who are suffering. It is an error in judgment to believe they are not affected by such compassion fatigue. Throughout her day, Rancour interacts with her colleagues in such a way as to acknowledge what it costs them to put themselves in relationship with people who are suffering: fellow pilgrims on the path. The book offers up numerous examples of simple kindnesses among nurses, physicians and other health care workers that can make this work peak, not bleak experiences. This book was written years before the current pandemic revealed what giving care to life-threatened patients looks like behind the closed doors of our hospitals. If you are expecting to feel depressed by such a read, may you unexpectedly find it to be hopeful and life-affirming! The perfect gift for that special nurse in your life or a thoughtful read for seriously ill patients. Consider giving The Pager Chronicles, Volumes I and II.

“... Gripping story of determination, listening, dedication, and commitment. Through the Red Door is a witness to the people of God responding to God’s call. The Holy Spirit convicted individuals whose creative vision and courage awakened a people, a Diocese, a city, churches, and others to respond with compassion and commitment. It’s a story not only of passion but of leadership and equipping God’s people for service.” — The Rev. Dr. R. Scott White, Rector Trinity Episcopal Church, Asheville. Laughter, tears, a stolen guitar tracked down and returned, and music-the songs of lives touched by Jesus Christ in courageous unmasked community, where “give and receive” is exchanged from those on the streets as from those in the suburbs, Through The Red Door is a powerful portrait of Kingdom reality. What a blessing to us all it is to have glimpses into the beautiful lives of those who dare proclaim “He Is Risen” by the way they listen, learn and love. To God be the glory! Recasting burnout as a crucial phase of service, Building Resilience Through Contemplative Practice uses real-world case studies to teach professionals and volunteers unique skills for cultivating resilience. Viewing service and burnout as interdependent throughout phases of stability, collapse, reorganization, and exploitation, the book uniquely combines elements of adaptive resilience theory with contemplative practices and pedagogies. Drawing on the author’s extensive experience working at the intersection of service and contemplative practices, this is the first book to demonstrate how and why professionals and volunteers can reframe burnout as an opportunity for resilience-building service. User-friendly case studies provide tools, skills, and exercises for reconstructive next steps. Chapters address personal, group, and structural levels of service and burnout. Illuminating the link between adaptive resilience and burnout as a normal and useful phase of service, Building Resilience Through Contemplative Practice is a necessary resource for professionals and volunteers across a wide range of service settings.
