This book, Not JUST Your Average Joe, is a slight detour from my first four books. Like my previous books, all the stories actually occurred-some serious, some sad, some humorous, and some personal. This book describes a brief "snapshot" of my personal life, written in the same style as my previous books. Enjoy another read.

Lucid and inspiring, Behold the Man is a unique exploration of Catholic spirituality for men. Much of the literature written for Catholic men focuses on topical issues such as fatherhood and sexuality. While this book does not exclude these subjects, it is the first to present a comprehensive picture of Catholic male spirituality. What is authentic male Catholic spirituality? What distinguishes it from Protestant male spirituality? How does masculine spirituality complement feminine spirituality? These questions and many more are answered in this book. Drawing from Scripture and Church teaching, the author roots Catholic male spirituality in a covenant relationship with God and the cross of Jesus Christ. He demonstrates that when a man embraces the cross he is truly able to be himself the man that God created and calls him to be. Behold the Man can deepen a man s experience of Christ and help him to know the Lord more intimately.

I have toyed and struggled with the thought of compiling this book for a long time; almost 35 years, in fact. Since graduating from West Point in 1974, I have visited over forty countries in my military and business career. Everywhere I've been I have looked for articles or stories that I could include in this book. Many short stories came from friends and sources marked -Unknown.' This book is dedicated to young people everywhere and written for their benefit. I realize that many young people today would rather buy a CD or DVD rather than a guidebook or an owner's manual- a book about how to improve their lives from just an average Joe. Some young people will only get this book if a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or probation officer gives it to them as a gift. I hope it is a gift worth keeping and sharing. Today, young people struggle with finding good examples of role models. My first role model was David Cortez while attending Rhodes Junior High School in San Antonio, Texas. David was a ninth grader and our Student Council President. He helped me with my successful political' campaign to be the next Student Council Secretary. I thought David walked on water.' David came from a strong family. He was smart, athletic, and good-looking. He had a beautiful girlfriend. David's story has a sad ending. He went on to Jefferson High, where he also excelled. He married his girlfriend- the girl of his dreams. A few years later, she tragically died in a car accident. Not much later in life, David, still a widower, died of a mysterious illness, leaving behind two young daughters. Parents should be their own kids' role models, but sometimes we, too, fall short of setting the good example for our kids. Parents lose credibility and respect because, from their kids' perspective, it seems like we were never young and rebellious. HELLO!!! We were. It is hard to believe, but we were and it was tough back then, too. It may actually be harder now in many ways- more distractions, more toys,' more peer pressure, more drugs, more gang violence, more graffiti, more sexual promiscuity, more TV, more video games and cyberspace but less family interaction and influence. Teachers, who genuinely care about their students' future success, are also rare. Teachers can be excellent role models and I applaud anyone who goes into this most honorable profession. In the business world, prudence is ignored and now takes a backseat to personal gain at any cost, recklessness, corruption and greed in some of our largest banks and corporations. In politics, the candidates tell the electorate what's popular rhetoric: who can be against better healthcare for all, better education for our children, and a strong defense. Once elected or defeated they find it difficult to work with the opposition for the benefit of our communities and nation. Today's politicians are no longer statesmen but socialists' bent on ridiculous spending programs and bailouts of mismanaged banks, companies and corrupt governments around the world at an exorbitant cost to American taxpayers. Having said all this, I am still optimistic about our country and about many of our youth and their positive impact on our society and our world. I wish I could say that I am optimistic about all of them, but unfortunately, it will be just a few of them that will make a difference. But these few will be the leaders of tomorrow, the peacemakers, the inventors, the farmers, the space explorers, the scientists, the teachers and the caregivers that will make all the difference in our world. Their answers to our world's problems and challenges will come from within- from a strong sense of leadership, character and responsibility, self-discipline; and respect for self, the unborn, the elderly, religious freedoms, strong families, authority and the environment. This book attempts to inspire & motivate more of to

Meet a man who, while a child, sees his mother bake bread every day from flour and oil jars that never run out. Read and find another man who contracts leprosy and reluctantly dips into the river seven times and finds himself suddenly cured. Climb up in a tree with a guy who was so short it was the only way he could see past the crowd to this man some called the Messiah. Then we read about the guy...This book is a work of Biblical stories. The central character of each story is not someone great. These ten characters are average Joe working stiff who happened to live during the Biblical era. Except for the time period they lived, these characters were not much different from you and me. But, in each case, something extraordinary happened that gave them a really great story to tell. Can you imagine telling a group of people about the day you took a trip and your donkey started talking to you? It was an extraordinary story. In many ways, this book is also a work of Biblical fiction. It isn't that the stories are untrue. In each case, you are reading about a real character of the Bible. Much like historical fiction has its roots in history, the same is true for this book. Its roots are in the Bible. What is fiction are some of the details. Some details come from the traditions of the Church. Others have legend standing behind them. And, still, others come fully from the mind of the author. Obedasher is probably not the name of the son of the Widow of Zarephath. The name itself was a creation of the author.Throughout the book, the author strives to faithfully tell the story, but also tries to tell the story as he sees it play out in his mind. How would Zacchaeus go about giving half his wealth to the poor? The Bible is quiet. The story in the book is not quiet.Nothing here says this is how things played out. Instead, it is one idea of how these stories might have played out long ago. Open your mind to the story and watch it play out. How is your understanding different from the understanding of the author. Who knows, in the details, you might be right. Or, what played out in the mind of the author could be a reality. As he imagined, and he wrote, the story playing itself out was filled with possibilities. Each chapter of the book began its life as a sermon done in the first person. The author wrote these messages, dressed in costume and delivered them to his congregation as if the character was telling his story to the congregation. The pages of the book carry on that tradition.
