To a young girl the life of a student nurse sounds exciting, but with long hours and short shrift it's never easy. So when Maggie Groff defies her parents' wishes and embarks as a student nurse at London's King's College Hospital, she must quickly get to grips with the demands of her chosen career. It's sink or swim. In this delightful romp through time, played out against the march of feminism and the fashion, music and movies of almost half a century ago, we follow Maggie's highs and lows as she struggles with stern ward sisters and wilful patients, and eventually qualifies as a registered nurse and sets sail for Australia. From nursing at a poor London housing estate and working as an in-house nurse at glamorous Selfridges to treating injuries on the Great Barrier Reef and becoming an industrial nurse at the iconic Sydney Opera House, Maggie shares her stories of mistakes and mayhem, tea and sympathy, and the life-affirming moments that made it all worthwhile.

A wonderfully crafted book that resonated deeply...BL. Very pleased to discover this bright new star. L. Easy to read, enjoyable and very funny. P.M. An accomplished storyteller - her style of writing is relaxed and easy on the senses and I am hopeful that she will follow up this book with further reminiscences. R.F. If you have ever worked or been in hospital or if you are someone who loves medical and nursing biographies, you will love this raw and original book because it provides a real insight into hospital life back in the day. Dawn had no idea what she wanted to do with her life but a set of circumstances collide that see her attending an interview for nurse training in 1977. There follows what someone describes as a howling good read. The memoir follows the ups and downs of a trainee nurse during the 1970s. It is written with humour and candour but also a great deal of compassion. The book follows the author's experiences as she and her friends come to terms with the non-stop hustle and bustle of hospital life. As you are drawn into the book you will be introduced to many unforgettable patients' and their stories, while getting to know a cracking good storyteller, when you follow her onto the hospital wards. Dawn shares the discipline, laughter and inevitable sadness as she learns to cope with the strains of shift work. It also highlights the domineering presence of the Ward Sister during that era. 'The Sister called to me. 'Nurse Brookes, set up a trolley for a lumbar puncture.' 'I have never set up a trolley for a lumbar puncture Sister.' 'WELL LEARN!' She shouted and stormed of up the ward. The chapters are separated into ward placements and the experiences of caring for patients in each of these different environments draws you in and helps you to understand what the student nurses' went through during their training. The most challenging placements are shared with humour and understanding, acknowledging her weaknesses. Remember, she writes, she is still a teenager coming across daily what most people will not experience in a lifetime. As well as providing an insight into nurse training, Hurry up Nurse, is a warmly written medical biography that treats us to a glimpse into the social history of life in the 1970s and early 1980s. This funny & poignant nursing memoir will make you laugh and make you cry. Pick up this page turning book today. Author Interview: What made you want to write a nursing memoir? I think, in a way, it was inevitable. I have always been a reader and whilst I love to read fiction, I tend to read more non-fiction and biographies than anything else. At first I started writing for myself and perhaps for future generations of family to find when researching a family tree. As the book developed, I became that young girl again and the vivid memories of patients and friends came flooding back. I felt that their stories and bravery needed to be shared. The other reason was that the memories made me laugh and remember the days when I loved nursing, there was so much fun and camaraderie at that time. Were there any times when you wanted to give up writing the memoir? Yes, indeed. Initially I started the work while still working full time and it was difficult to find the time and the discipline to write, it tended to be start, stop, start for about a year. I really gave up when my laptop met with an accident and I lost five chapters that could not be recovered. At that point I did give up and it wasn't until I broke my foot at work and had to take some time off that I found myself with too much time on my hands as I was unable to drive. I found the old file with the original chapters and started again - finishing the book in six weeks. The rest is history. Who would enjoy this book? Anyone who likes human interest stories and medical dramas.

Hope Dies Last is Studs Terkel's inspiring new oral history of social action in America. An alternative, more personal history of the ''American century,'' Hope Dies Last forms a legacy of the indefatigable spirit that Studs has always embodied, and an inheritance for those who, by taking a stand, are making concrete the dreams of today. For Terkel, these interviews represent a change that has taken place in the last few years of uncertainty in America. From a doctor who teaches his young students compassion, to the now-retired brigadier general who flew the Enola Gay over Hiroshima, these interviews tell us much about the power of the American dream and the force of individuals who hope for a better world. Terkel's subjects express with grace and warmth their secret hopes and dreams, combining to tell an inspiring story of optimism and persistence that resonates with the eloquence of conviction.

Why would Doug Hall follow in Robert Peary's 1909 sled tracks to the North Pole, despite the grueling terrain and temperatures between 15 and 62 degrees below zero? His goal was to resurrect the spirit of Peary's journey in a world increasingly driven by instant gratification, short term business focus, and lack of sustained dedication to great causes. Peary succeeded where some 578 expeditions before him had failed. North Pole Tenderfoot is Doug's attempt to let the reader experience what is possible when one does what Peary did: think big.

Presents fresh research and powerful stories to give voice to a new generation of women driven by challenge and change Offers compelling advice on how to make wandering a life strategy, not just a series of unplanned events Includes probing questions and thought-provoking exercises to help readers find peace in life's chaos and confusion 2011 Axiom Award Gold Medal winner in the category of Women in Business There’s a new generation of high-achieving women today—confident, ambitious, accomplished, driven. And yet, as master coach Marcia Reynolds discovered, many of them are also anxious, discontented, and frustrated. They’re constantly questioning their purpose, juggling multiple roles, and reevaluating their goals. As a result they’re restless—they move from job to job, from challenge to challenge, almost on impulse. They’re wander women. Existing personal growth books, so focused on empowerment and encouragement, can’t help these women. They don’t need to find their voice—they know how to roar. They don’t expect balance in their lives—but they long to find peace in the chaos. They aren’t necessarily focused on gaining a seat in the boardroom—they want projects that mean something or businesses they run on their own. Reynolds helps wander women understand the roots of their restlessness and make their wandering a conscious strategy, not a reaction. Drawing on extensive research and interviews she illuminates the needs that drive their decisions and the core assumptions that lock them into rigid perfectionist patterns. She offers a wealth of exercises and practices that will enable wander women to reset their mental programming, discover new ways of finding direction, and thoughtfully choose and plan their futures, whether they climb the corporate ladder, find satisfaction below the glass ceiling, or set out on their own. For every woman plagued by frustration and self-doubt—“Will what I’ve done ever feel good enough?”—Wander Woman sets the stage to uncover the answers to life’s tough questions about meaning and purpose, significance and value, and the legacy you can leave from a life lived well.

Thats the question that rages like a storm around Jess Goldberg, clouding her life and her identity. Growing up differently gendered in a blue--collar town in the 1950s, coming out as a butch in the bars and factories of the prefeminist 60s, deciding to pass as a man in order to survive when she is left without work or a community in the early 70s. This powerful, provocative and deeply moving novel sees Jess coming full circle, she learns to accept the complexities of being a transgendered person in a world demanding simple explanations: a he-she emerging whole, weathering the turbulence.
