Excerpt from Notable Women Authors of the Day Between the production of Realities: a Tale, in 1851, and Witch Stories, there was a gap of ten years, which the young writer devoted principally to journalism. She was, indeed, the first of women journalists. She contributed to several of the daily papers and magazines. Presently a series of pungent and clever essays began in the Saturday Review, which increased its fame, and took the world by storm. The Girl of the Period, The Shrieking Sisterhood, Paying One's Shot, Mature Sirens, have now passed into proverbs. They made a famous topic of conversation at dinner-tables, and proved a decided hit. For many years a certain lady of rank had the credit of the series, until at last, after many futile efforts, Mrs. Lynn Linton was allowed to collect her own papers and publish them under her own name. Excerpt from The Women Novelists In the beginning they copied men, and saw through men's eyes, because - here and elsewhere they assumed that men's dicta and practice in life and art were their only possible guides and examples. Women to-day take up every form of fiction attempted by men, because they assume that their powers are as great, their right to express themselves equally varied. Excerpt from Women-Writers of the Nineteenth Century This collection of studies does not aim at giving an ex haustive account of the contribution made by women to Nineteenth Century literature. Neither does it profess to be in any sense a feminist treatise. The writers selected were in all cases remarkable women; but they were something more -remarkable human beings. I have endeavoured throughout to concentrate, not merely on questions of sex, but on the complete humanity of each woman. So far as possible all pre conceived theories of the literary woman have been deliberately excluded. There is no initial attempt to determine what the woman of letters should be like. After looking carefully at these particular women, we may see What she has sometimes been like; and we may also discern certain characteristics common to different women of literary instinct. That is all the theory which this book professes to give. For its aim has not been the evolution of a principle. It has attempted something more elusive, and to many minds far more satis fying - to look at individual writers, as it were face to face, with a quickened sense of kinship and reverence. Excerpt from Wit and Wisdom of Modern Women Writers: Selected and Arranged With Introductions This volume has been arranged to bring together passages from the best work, the most typical work of some of the women writers who are enriching our literature to-day. Such a selec tion between the covers of one small book must necessarily be far from exhaustive; but the quotations from each writer will at least serve to show the particular field which she has made her own. In like manner, the Intro ductions have been designed to indicate briefly the development of each author's thought, and the distinctiveness of her mental outlook. Excerpt from The Woman's Story, as Told by Twenty American Women: With Portraits, and Sketches of the Authors The woman's story as told by twenty American women is a composite picture of the representative fiction work of the female writers of the republic. It is one which depicts the types and characteristics of people who unitedly compose our young nation. The composite woman's picture is full of patriotic fire; of the fervor and faith of free institutions, and is distin guished by a zealous allegiance to the domestic quali ties of the people, which have found widest expression under our form of government. The difierences in population; the varieties of classes, and the broad distinctions in local coloring are vividly exhibited in the annals of American fiction, the largest contributors to which are women. The compilation represents the field of fiction, from the appearance of the first great American novel to the present day. Mrs. Stowe's sketch of New England life, which Opens the volume, was the forerunner of Uncle Tom's Cabin, and is as graphic a pen-picture of the phase of life it represents as was her famous novel of slavery. Miss Alcott's Transcendental Wild Oats' is the truest delineation of the salient features of the Transcendental movement yet made, and is as striking in its faithfulness as is Mrs. Stowe's Uncle Lot.
