Muchos hidalgos han permanecido olvidados pese a aportar el mayor número de individuos al estado noble, que muchos asocian, equivocadamente, solo a los Títulos del Reino. En esta obra se muestran una serie de personajes, todos ellos hidalgos, que destacaron con su contribución en diversos ámbitos: civil, militar, religioso, político, jurídico, artístico, científico, empresarial, industrial, etc., resaltando sus logros. Se desmonta el estereotipo del “hidalgo pobre y ocioso”, tan difundida, sobre todo en la literatura y el teatro del Siglo de Oro, tan lleno de alusiones sarcásticas a los hidalgos pobres, fanfarrones y pendencieros, y que aún sigue vigente en la actualidad, pero que, en realidad, no se corresponde con los hechos. En esta obra se realiza una síntesis del estamento noble, sus clases, la distribución de la hidalguía, sus distintas denominaciones, sus privilegios, su consideración social a lo largo de los siglos, su reflejo en la literatura, las particularidades de la hidalguía en las Indias, las hidalguías colectivas y universales, las probanzas de la hidalguía ante los tribunales, la confusión de estado y, por último, la situación de la nobleza en la actualidad, además de referenciar a numerosos hombres y mujeres hidalgos cuyas vidas nos hablan de los valores imperantes en la sociedad de cada tiempo.

Este tercer tomo del Diccionario de historiadores, juristas y pensadores políticos de Vasconia. Notitia Vasconiae abarca el periodo que va de 1876 a 1936, es decir, desde la Ley de 21 de octubre de 1876 que marca la supresión foral para Bizkaia, Álava y Gipuzkoa, hasta el inicio de la guerra civil de 1936. Se trata de un periodo especialmente rico sobre todo en cuanto al pensamiento político, pero también repleto de reflexiones jurídicas y de innovaciones en el campo de la historiografía. Además, el asociacionismo científico y cultural tiene un notable desarrollo en estos años: la Asociación Euskara de Navarra, las Comisiones de Monumentos, la Société des Sciences, Lettres et Arts de Bayonne, la sección de Historia de la Sociedad de Estudios Vascos, etc. Otro tanto habría que decir del desarrollo de la prensa periódica en todas sus vertientes: política, cultural, generalista e incluso deportiva. Consiguientemente, el periodo 1876-1936 es el de la consolidación de la prensa escrita y de las publicaciones periódicas de carácter científico. Siguiendo el modelo del tomo anterior, la obra se articula en seis bloques temático-territoriales: Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, Álava, Navarra, Vasconia continental y autores de fuera de Vasconia. Cada bloque está dotado de una introducción histórico-historiográfica, aparte, naturalmente, de la relación de las voces correspondientes a cada territorio en este periodo concreto. En total se presentan 304 voces de autores, más las respectivas introducciones correspondientes a cada bloque. Para la redacción de estos textos han colaborado un total de 122 investigadores pertenecientes a 52 universidades y centros culturales y de investigación.

Mexico’s Reforma, the mid-nineteenth-century liberal revolution, decisively shaped the country by disestablishing the Catholic Church, secularizing public affairs, and laying the foundations of a truly national economy and culture. The Lawyer of the Church is an examination of the Mexican clergy’s response to the Reforma through a study of the life and works of Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía (1810–68), one of the most influential yet least-known figures of the period. By analyzing how Munguía responded to changing political and intellectual scenarios in defense of the clergy’s legal prerogatives and social role, Pablo Mijangos y González argues that the Catholic Church opposed the liberal revolution not because of its supposed attachment to a bygone past but rather because of its efforts to supersede colonial tradition and refashion itself within a liberal yet confessional state. With an eye on the international influences and dimensions of the Mexican church-state conflict, The Lawyer of the Church also explores how Mexican bishops gradually tightened their relationship with the Holy See and simultaneously managed to incorporate the papacy into their local affairs, thus paving the way for the eventual “Romanization” of Mexican Catholicism during the later decades of the century.

La llengua espanyola parlada pels moriscs abans de ser expulsats del seu país de naixement i del dels seus avantpassats va perviure a l'exili, en una diàspora principalment establerta en països de llengua àrab governats per l'imperi turc-otomà o pel sultanat del Marroc. Aquest llibre se centra en les restes conservades d'aquesta llengua espanyola parlada en un sol país: la Tunísia actual, un territori que correspon pràcticament al mateix espai geopolític de la província de l'imperi turc-otomà durant els segles XVI-XVIII, època que constitueix el període central d'aquest estudi. La primera part analitza els testimoniatges que ens han arribat de l'existència d'aquesta llengua parlada, almenys, fins a mitjan segle XVIII. La segona, recull les restes lingüístiques que han quedat de l'espanyol dels moriscs fins al segle XX.
