En este libro se ofrece el estudio del habla de los pastores de La infancia de Jesu-Christo de Gaspar Fernández y Ávila, autor malagueño de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. La particularidad que tiene la citada obra es que de modo sistemático los personajes rurales pretenden reproducir el habla andaluza de la zona malagueña donde el autor ejerció su sacerdocio; aunque, hay que decirlo, mezclada con algunos rasgos del "sayagués" (habla artificial que se empleó desde el Siglo de Oro en los personajes rurales). En el estudio que aquí se presenta se atiende a dos aspectos: por un lado, a caracterizar esta habla andaluza con una perspectiva diacrónica, es decir, situándola en el correspondiente contexto histórico de la evolución del andaluz; y por otro, a deslindar aquello que es andaluz de lo que es foráneo, que el autor toma de la tradición literaria o, simplemente, inventa.

Esta obra ofrece una visión comparativa del momento evolutivo en el que se encuentra la modalidad de habla herreña, cuyo carácter conservador es ampliamente conocido dentro del conjunto de variedades canarias. El estudio aborda cuatro fenómenos fónicos variables: el debilitamiento y la pérdida de la /s/ y la /n/ implosivas, el proceso que conduce a la elisión de la /d/ intervocálica y, por último, el yeísmo. Para ello se utiliza una muestra amplia y representativa del universo sobre el que se ha trabajado; los resultados finales se exponen, además de con índices de frecuencias, con valores probabilísticos, lo que permite establecer la importancia de los diversos factores lingüísticos y sociales considerados.
